  • More volcanic eruptions on Caribbean island of St. Vincent

    KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent — Conditions worsened on Sunday at a volcano on the eastern Caribbean island of St. Vincent as loud rumbling, lightning and heavy ashfall were observed and residents reported power cuts. The eruption Friday of La Soufrière forced many residents to evacuate their homes, though some remained in place. The rumbling was heard in the capital of Kingstown, about 20 miles (32 kilometres) south. “I’m just here wondering when it’s going to calm down,” resident Kalique Sutherland said. The eruption could continue for some time, said Prof. Richard Robertson, the lead scientist at the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Center. “It’s likely that at some point it would quiet down and hopefully we would have a break so that we could recover a little bit more, but don’t be surprised if after the break it picks up like this again,” Robertson said. Elford Lewis, a 56-year-old farmer who evacuated his home on Sunday morning, said the ongoing eruption is worse than the last big one in 1979. “This one is more serious,'' said Lewis, who witnessed the big eruption decades ago. An eruption of the 4,003-foot (1,220-meter) volcano in 1902 killed roughly 1,600 people. About 16,000 people have had to flee their ash-covered communities with as many belongings as they could stuff into suitcases and backpacks. However, there have been no reports of anyone being killed or injured by the initial blast or those that followed. Ralph Gonsalves, the prime minister of the 32 islands that make up the country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, has said people should remain calm and keep trying to protect themselves from the coronavirus. He said officials were trying to figure out the best way to collect and dispose of the ash, which covered an airport runway near Kingstown, and fell as far away as Barbados, about 120 miles (190 kilometres) to the east. About 3,200 people took refuge at 78 government-run shelters, and four empty cruise ships stood ready to take other evacuees to nearby islands, with a group of more than 130 already taken to St. Lucia. Those staying at the shelters were tested for COVID-19, with anyone testing positive being taken to an isolation centre.     LONDON — A season that provided the flickers of a title challenge is now turning into the worst of Jose Mourinho's managerial career. Of all the managers to inflict Tottenham's 10th loss of the Premier League season, it was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who replaced Mourinho at Manchester United. Maybe that explains why Mourinho was so irritated with Solskjaer after a 3-1 home loss saw Tottenham fall six points from fourth place which is occupied by West Ham again after the east London club beat Leicester 3-2 on Sunday. The post-match focus at Tottenham was less on Edinson Cavani’s diving header that put second-place United 2-1 in front and more on the circumstances that denied the forward the game's opening goal. Cavani had slotted through Hugo Lloris’ legs after the ball was rolled into his path by Paul Pogba. But then the goal was ruled out after a lengthy VAR review penalized Scott McTominay for a push on Son Heung-min who went tumbling to the ground. “The game has gone ... if that’s a clear and obvious error," Solskjaer said. “We shouldn’t be conned but I have to say, if my son stays down like this for three minutes ... and he needs his 10 mates to help him up, he won’t get any food." Mourinho bristled at Solskjaer's criticism of Son, who did go on to break the deadlock in the 40th minute. “Sonny is very lucky that his father is a better person than Ole because I think a father you always have to feed their kids, it doesn't matter what they do," Mourinho said. “If you steal to feed your kids, you steal. I am very, very disappointed. Like we say in Portuguese, ‘Bread is bread, cheese is cheese.’ I told Ole what I think about his comments." After discovering what Solskjaer had said in a TV interview and quickly challenging him on it, Mourinho was disappointed not to be asked for his reaction in the news conference. “It’s really sad that you don’t ask me about it," Mourinho said. “It’s really sad you don’t have the moral honesty to treat me the way you treat others." Never before in a career that has seen Mourinho win domestic titles with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid has the Portuguese lost as many as 10 league matches in a season. While David Moyes — another former United manager — could be leading West Ham into the Champions League for the first time, Mourinho is set to miss out at a second attempt at qualification with the 2019 beaten finalists. United’s comeback began in the 57th when Fred teed up Cavani for a shot that was parried by Hugo Lloris and the Brazilian followed up with his first Premier League goal since 2018. Having denied Bruno Fernandes, Lloris was beaten again in the 79th when the Portugal midfielder’s nutmeg helped to set up Mason Greenwood for a cross that Cavani got on the end of with a header. And Greenwood put further gloss on the win in the sixth minute of stoppage time by scoring after Pogba and Cavani combined to set up the English forward for a shot that Lloris got a touch to but couldn’t keep out. “I’m not going home upset with my players," Mourinho said. “They gave what they can." Mourinho had enjoyed a 6-1 win at United in October and Tottenham had been top of the standings in December. But Tottenham has fallen to seventh place, while Solskjaer is still on course to deliver the team’s highest finish since being runners-up three years ago under Mourinho. The Premier League trophy seems out of reach for United with Manchester City 11 points ahead. While United is still in contention for the Europa League, Mourinho has a League Cup final meeting with Manchester City in two weeks. LINGARD DOUBLE Jesse Lingard took his goal tally to eight in nine appearances since joining West Ham on loan from Manchester United. The win allowed West Ham to dislodge Chelsea and move back into fourth place. Lingard volleyed in the opener and tapped in a second before halftime after being set up by Jarrod Bowen, who added the third three minutes into the second half. Kelechi Iheanacho scored twice for Leicester but the third-place team couldn't produce an equalizer. NEWCASTLE COMEBACK Allan Saint-Maximin came off the bench to set up Jacob Murphy's equalizer for Newcastle at Burnley and then scored himself to seal a 2-1 win.   • Dozens more Ottawa pharmacies to begin offering vaccines

    Ottawa's pharmacy vaccine rollout is set to drastically expand in the coming days when dozens of new locations begin administering the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine, the province has announced. More than 700 locations provincewide have been added to the COVID-19 pharmacy pilot project and will be able to immunize people aged 55 and older as soon as Monday, according to a Sunday media release. In Ottawa, that includes around 80 new locations, Nepean MPP Lisa MacLeod said in a tweet. At the moment, there are 34 pharmacies in Ottawa that are able to offer COVID-19 vaccinations. Sunday's announcement brings the number of pharmacies participating in the pilot project to around 1,400. The province is aiming to have 1,500 pharmacies providing vaccine doses by the end of April. While the new pharmacies can start offering shots as soon as Monday, not all will begin doing so at the same time, the province said. People are still being asked to check the province's list of participating locations and to contact individual pharmacies to book their appointment. In his own tweet, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson thanked the province for including more locations in the downtown core and in Vanier.

    Members of Gen Z are most likely to be affected by lockdown loneliness, according to the latest nationwide survey. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that 16 to 24 year olds were five times more likely to say they had felt lonely in the past seven days than people aged between 65 and 74. Overall, 7% of the adult population – 3.7 million people – told the ONS were “always or often” lonely during the last seven days. This is an increase of more than a million people since the first lockdown a year ago. Single people and people living in industrial areas with high levels of unemployment were also more likely to report that they are experiencing lockdown loneliness. Underlining the link between access to nature and mental health, people living in rural areas were generally less likely to report loneliness.     (Bloomberg) -- Italian diagnostics company DiaSorin SpA agreed to acquire Luminex Corp. for about $1.8 billion, gaining the maker of Covid-19 testing kits and a greater foothold in the U.S. market.DiaSorin agreed to pay $37 a share in the all-cash transaction, according to a statement Sunday. That’s about 12% more than Luminex’s closing share price on April 9.Austin, Texas-based Luminex makes Covid-19 laboratory tests along with a suite of other biological testing technologies. In late March, it applied to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for emergency approval of a lab test that combines tests for Covid-19 and the flu.“Luminex perfectly fits with our strategy to grow our positioning in the molecular diagnostics space,” DiaSorin Chief Executive Officer Carlo Rosa said in the statement. The purchase also gives it a bigger presence in North America, which accounted for about 37% of its sales in 2020, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.Like many companies in the lab-testing space, the pandemic has been a boon for Luminex’s business. The sale comes amid a pickup in health-care mergers, including among companies that make products for dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. The company had been exploring strategic options, including a potential sale, after receiving takeover interest from companies including DiaSorin, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg News earlier this year.The transaction will be funded through a mix of cash and external financing.
