Apple's rumored VR Headset expected to be priced at $3,000

Apple is rumored to be unveiling a new mixed reality headset at their WWDC event. Yahoo Finance Reporter Dan Howley breaks down what is set to be Apple's first major product release in 10 years.

Video Transcript

RACHELLE AKUFFO: Apple's Worldwide COP Developers Conference is kicking off today in California at 1 PM Eastern time, and the company is set to announce a slew of new products at the big event, including the highly anticipated VR headset. Yahoo Finance's tech editor Dan Howley is there to set the scene for us. Hi, Dan. I can already hear the buzz in the air over there.

DAN HOWLEY: Yeah, Rachelle. That's actually Apple employees clapping and hooting for WWDC, which is the Worldwide Developers Conference, which is why we're here in Cupertino, California. Obviously, the big announcement expected is to be that VR/AR headset from Apple. It's been widely reported on a long time.

And this really could be the coming out party for it's kind of new era for Apple. Obviously, whether or not it's going to sell well, it's very much up in the air. We have Meta kind of controlling the market at this moment with 80% market share. Although, it's a pretty small market.

But it's not just the AR/VR headset that's going to be announced. We're also expecting the latest version of Apple's iOS, that's the operating system that powers the iPhone. That would be iOS 17. Should get some new features there. A new version of Watch OS. That powers the Apple Watch, as you can imagine, as well as potentially some new Macs and Mac OS features.

The new Macs specifically are expected to be a 15 inch MacBook Air, as well as potentially some new desktops. And you can imagine there's expectations for some kind of AI-related announcement, though there hasn't been much rumor around that. If it's any inkling as to where Wall Street is looking, it would be on the AI side. So we'll look to see what Apple is doing there.

There was a recent report that they're trying to change how the Siri feature works on the iPhone, which I'm hoping mine didn't just activate. But you know, it really is going to be a big event. It's not the iPhone. But it's everything that powers Apple's ecosystem at the event today.

RACHELLE AKUFFO: I mean, it makes sense. We know that Tim Cook, you know, he's a software and services person. But you know, your original Apple person, they do love a good gadget. So looking forward to all those updates. Thank you so much, our very own Dan Howley.
