Alpyn Beauty founder on the rise of clean beauty

Kendra Kolb Butler, Alpyn Beauty founder joined Yahoo Finance Live to discuss the clean beauty sector and her growth plans for her brand.

Video Transcript

SEANA SMITH: Clean beauty products are a big driver in a growing market for skin care. Now the other skin care market is huge. It's actually expected to reach $181 billion by 2025. So we want to talk to one founder of a company that's looking to capitalize on some of this growth, specifically in clean beauty. And for that, we want to bring in Kendra Kolb Butler, founder of Alpyn Beauty. And Kendra, it's great to have you here. This is a segment clearly that has already experienced pretty tremendous growth. And looking forward, certainly lots of opportunities there.

Just talk to us just about how Alpyn beauty fits into this space and why you're seeing such a huge opportunity for clean beauty products.

KENDRA KOLB BUTLER: Well, I think there's a secular trend for clean beauty in general because people are starting to realize that by taking toxins and chemicals out of our skin care, we might be in a healthier state of the skin, body, and mind. What we're doing at Alpyn Beauty that's a little bit different is we are using wild plants that we sustainably harvest from my hometown of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. So taking that clean trend one step further and utilizing the powers of mother nature and the potential of these wild plants that grow basically untouched by man, and harnessing the benefits that they can bring directly to the skin.

- Some of us are old enough to remember when people from South Florida would flock to Costa Rica for facelifts and then rub their faces with Crisco. We've come a long way.

KENDRA KOLB BUTLER: We've come a long way.

- Yeah. There's a bunch of my mother's generation, let me tell you. It wasn't a pretty sight with Crisco on their faces. Who's the market? Is it women who might be 50 and older? Or is it younger women who are demanding these cleaner products for their skin?

KENDRA KOLB BUTLER: There really is no specific age range. I think that all generations are starting to realize that in this 21st century, we have made tremendous progress in terms of technology and skincare ingredients. And we can utilize more natural alternatives to those things that once just came from a chemical lab. So I really think there's no specific age group. I mean, you of course have the Gen Z and millennials that are very into research and they're constantly online learning about new ingredients.

But we have customers over 60 years old that love and appreciate the brand. And really it's every woman just wants results, every man. Anybody who's using skin care wants to see their products perform. So if you can get that from a natural substitute, why not?

SEANA SMITH: Kendra what a natural ingredient would you say the next big thing in skin care that we should all be excited about?

KENDRA KOLB BUTLER: So we're really loving the retinol alternatives right now. Retinol has been around for a very long time. It's kind of been the gold standard in skin care. But it's produced chemically. It's a chemical synthetic. And it's actually it can have some adverse reaction on the skin. It can have dryness, redness. It's not for everybody even though it's an amazing ingredient. So the natural alternatives to retinol we're seeing right now are something called bakuchiol. It's from the babchi plant, which is amazing.

And this plant has actually been clinically tested against retinol. And it's neck and neck in terms of antiaging performance. Fine lines and wrinkles, uneven texture and tone on the skin, but not from a chemical lab. So we're able now to find those natural clean alternatives that are just as effective as those that come from a chemical lab. But none of the downside. So that's really exciting for us.

- This is a small business segment. I'm curious as a founder, what advice do you have for other founders so that they don't burn out as they're growing their businesses?

KENDRA KOLB BUTLER: Burnout is something that we've all experienced I think, and not just founders. I think people across this country in general, we've all felt like we've had a place in our life where enough is enough. And my advice not only to founders but to other people experiencing that is make sure that you set your limitations and you set boundaries in your life. And when you feel that burnout is coming on, just take a TO and take a break. Because once you burn out, it's really hard to get back in the other direction versus just taking care of yourself along the way, and slowing down, and preventing it from actually happening.

SEANA SMITH: And that's the advice we can all take to heart. Kendra Kolb Butler, founder of Alpyn Beauty. Thanks so much for taking the time to join us. And we wish you all the best.
