Telecom Italia (TIM) will hold a board meeting on Friday over a 700 million euro ($772 million) non-binding bid the telecoms group has received for its Sparkle subsea cable unit, two sources told Reuters on Thursday. On Wednesday, Italy's Treasury and Spanish fund Asterion submitted a joint bid for Sparkle. The board is expected to hand Chief Executive Pietro Labriola a mandate to negotiate a binding bid, one of the sources added.
Italy's Treasury said on Wednesday it had submitted a 700 million euro ($774 million) offer, jointly with Spanish infrastructure fund Asterion, for Telecom Italia's (TIM) submarine cable unit Sparkle. The ministry is bidding together with Retelit, an Italian fibre network operator owned by Asterion. Italy is looking to secure control of Sparkle, a firm deemed of strategic importance due to its over 600,000-km network that transmits information between countries in Europe, the Mediterranean and the Americas.
