If you like Scandium and you think it's gonna play a valuable role in the next decade this company is probably the best option in the market. They project to be ready for production in 2022, most of the other small caps in the Scandium space are far away from that goal. In addition to that we have a great ownership from Insiders of about 45%, as well as many other plus points, from the jurisdiction where they operate, the boost that Rio Tinto entering this commodity space will give and many others.

With today's PR, it appears the coast is clear for Scandium to JV the property and maybe in another couple years be making some money.

The deal with Barrick Gold is a statement of trust to Scandium International Mining Corp, and coming from such an important mining company it's worth even more. It's definitely hard to see the SP going no where for such a long time but work will pay off in the long run. And if i'm not wrong in previous company presentation they said they could start to produce in 2022. Let's hope they'll find good partners and buyers and that's going to produce good revenues and profits soon.

FWIW - I like the comment about the potential size of the aerospace market for scandium.

CENTENNIAL, Colo., Oct. 10, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- NioCorp Developments Ltd. (“NioCorp” or the “Company”) (TSX: NB; OTCQX: NIOBF; and FSE: BR3) is pleased to announce that it has signed a commercial sales agreement with Traxys North America LLC (“Traxys”) for up to 120 tonnes of scandium trioxide over the first 10 years of operation of NioCorp’s planned Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project (the “Project”) in Nebraska. The contract presupposes the Company securing project financing, obtaining all necessary approvals, and constructing a mine and processing facility at Elk Creek.

Under the sales agreement, Traxys is obligated to purchase 12 tonnes per year of scandium trioxide for the first 10 years of the Project’s production, subject to satisfaction of certain conditions. That annual amount represents approximately 10 percent of NioCorp’s planned annual production of Scandium. Traxys can purchase more than 12 tonnes per year from NioCorp, and the agreement can be extended beyond the 10-year term, by mutual agreement.

At 12 tonnes per year, the size of the NioCorp-Traxys sales contract is approximately equivalent to all current global sales of scandium, according to 2018 estimates by the U.S. Geological Survey. Independent estimates of latent demand for scandium, defined as demand that cannot be satisfied because of a lack of supply or a lack of knowledge of available or affordable supply, peg such demand at several hundred tonnes per year in the aerospace sector alone.1

Mark A. Smith, CEO and Executive Chairman of NioCorp, said: “We are very pleased with the size, term, and potential value of this contract. But a core value component of this agreement lies in the strategic partnership it establishes between NioCorp and Traxys. Traxys is a global leader in a variety of strategic and industrial metals markets, and it has a long track record of success in both serving and growing global markets for strategic materials such as scandium. We look forward to working with the leadership at Traxys to build and grow markets for a variety of scandium materials.”

Mark Kristoff, CEO of Traxys, said: “Scandium delivers truly remarkable benefits and enhanced performance across a variety of applications, and global demand for scandium clearly has been limited to date by a lack of supply. NioCorp’s Elk Creek Project will change the fundamental calculus of scandium markets substantially, and we see significant growth potential in these markets as a result. Traxys looks forward to working with NioCorp to establish and grow new markets for scandium and to helping our customers leverage the value of this remarkable metal.”

Traxys will focus its scandium sales and marketing efforts on customers in the aerospace and sporting goods sectors, and it retains the exclusive right to sell NioCorp scandium to those sectors. In return, Traxys has agreed to purchase its entire needs of scandium trioxide, scandium alloys, scandium master alloy and other scandium-based products exclusively from NioCorp, including for scandium sales to other sectors, subject to availability of adequate supplies by NioCorp and other conditions. NioCorp will work with Traxys to promote and market scandium to the aerospace, sporting goods and other industry sectors. NioCorp retains the right to make direct sales of scandium to markets outside of aerospace and sporting goods, as well as direct sales to the U.S. Government.

With over 20 global offices and $6 billion in average annual revenue, Traxys is a global leader in the sales and marketing of a variety of specialty and industrial metals, including the following: magnesium; zinc; copper; lead; cobalt, chrome, manganese; rare earths; vanadium, titanium; tantalum; silicon carbide; uranium; and ferro alloys such as ferro-chrome, ferro-manganese, ferro-nickel, and ferro-niobium. It is majority owned by The Carlyle Group (NASDAQ: CG), with significant minority interests of other private investors and the Traxys management team.

Scadium is going to be utilized in the manufacturing process for new solid state batteries in EV's. SCY produces this element and also has a patent on it's use in SS batteries.

Anglo-Australian metals mining giant Rio Tinto Group said last week it is beginning to produce high-quality scandium oxide for use in aluminium alloys at its Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) plant in Quebec.

Rio Tinto said the US$6-million project came in on time and on budget and has gone into production in under six months from the beginning of construction. The project’s next step is a ramp up of production to three metric tons of scandium oxide per annum.

The operation harvests scandium oxide from waste generated by titanium dioxide production, and the firm says it already has plans to increase capacity provided market demand remains strong.

Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium managing director Stéphane Leblanc explained the importance of the project in a related press release.

“For the first time, customers will benefit from a North American supply of scandium oxide for applications in solid oxide fuel cells, lasers, lighting products or as an additive to produce high-performance alloys. In less than two years, we have gone from testing a process to extract this critical material in a lab to being able to supply approximately 20% of the global market. This is a testament to our team’s capacity to think outside the box and deliver on our commitments.”

Quebec Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Jonatan Julien lauded the firm for choosing his province for the project.

“I am very pleased to see this major critical and strategic minerals project come to fruition in Quebec. It will help strengthen the security of our supply and add value to our industrial waste from the mining sector. It is also consistent with the government’s vision of creating wealth in a greener economy. I wish Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium and the team at this new plant every success!”

Rio Tinto’s footprint in the aluminium-scandium alloy area continues to grow, as the firm inked a deal with metal additive manufacturer Amaero to supply its first batch of aluminium-scandium alloy to its North American operations in the spring.

    This from a friendly competitor:

The two Nebraska Congressmen wrote a letter recently to the Trump Administration advocating for scandium’s inclusion in the “Critical Materials” list. In their letter, which can be seen here, the Congressman noted the following:

“Scandium is used in a variety of defense and civil applications including lasers, electronics, and high-performance lighting. When added to aluminum, scandium makes an extraordinarily light and strong alloy for use in bulkheads, heat shields, fuel and exhaust systems, aircraft fuselage and landing gear assemblies, mobile bridges, missiles, and other defense systems. In the commercial sector, scandium alloys are poised to drive major advances in commercial aircraft and surface transportation systems through greater fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. Scandium is also a critical component of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells which provide highly efficient and reliable power generation for DoD, NASA, and companies such as Home Depot, Walmart, Apple, Google, and Verizon,” they wrote.

“Despite these strategic uses, today our nation is 100% dependent on imported scandium, primarily from China and Russia. We share the concerns of many of our colleagues in Congress who consider this a significant national security vulnerability for the United States. For this reason, the FY2018 National Defense Authorization Act included language that specifically mentions scandium and the need to develop domestic sources of this strategic material. We also note that the European Union added scandium to its 2017 list of Critical Raw Materials, further illustrating its growing importance in global commodity supply chains,” they wrote.

I've started buying SCY because I see it as an interesting play in a niche market. It'll take time, like most of 2018, but I'm willing to sit on it and buy more if I think the PPS is an opportunity.

    As always, time will tell.
