Stock Market Today: The Dow Jones rose Friday ahead of an inflation survey. Nvidia stock rallied above a key level Thursday.
(Reuters) -Wall Street's main indexes rose on Friday as investors reevaluated the possibility of a bigger interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve next week, with interest rate sensitive small cap stocks outperforming. Traders' bets on a 50-basis point rate cut jumped to 47% from 28% on Thursday, CME's FedWatch Tool showed, after former New York Fed President Bill Dudley said late Thursday there was a strong case for a 50-bps interest rate cut. Media reports had said early Thursday the size of the cut was "a close call."
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.6%, and the Nasdaq composite jumped 1%. More gains for Nvidia and other Big Tech stocks drove the market higher, offsetting a slump for Moderna after the vaccine maker cut its plans for research-and-development investment. Treasury yields were relatively steady in the bond market following reports on layoffs and inflation that included few surprises.
