The main reason for recent drop in mining stocks was stronger dollar. All commodities are priced in dollars; when the dollar gets stronger, iron ore price declines. Of course, stronger dollar also reduces mining costs, incurred in local currencies, but this impact is less acknowledged. Basically, the market has a convention: dollar up, sell miners.
In economic sense, stronger dollar together with higher rates will apply powerful brake on US domestic industries and bring US recession faster than inflation can be taken down. The economic slowdown will cool the dollar, and commodity prices will be strong again.

Recession is bad for miners; inflation is good for miners. So, the question, regarding mining investment, is whether inflation or recession will be in place in 4-6 months from now, around eoy.

From today’s joint communique after UK-Mongolia roundtable meeting, posted on UK government site
    Start of quote
Ministers welcomed the inclusion of Mongolia in the UK’s “Enhanced Framework” Trade Preference Arrangements from 1 January 2021 and expressed their intention to engage actively to facilitate bilateral trade and economic cooperation. They also welcomed the recent first visit of the UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Mongolia, Daniel Kawczynski MP and the recent agreement between Rio Tinto and the Mongolian government on commencement of the underground phase of the Oyu Tolgoi project. They noted the importance of an attractive business and investment environment in Mongolia and welcomed ongoing work on investment protection, legal reform and combatting corruption.

It seems Oyu Tolgoi expansion gets traction, disregarding TRQ buyout outcome.

Rio dividend is variable, it depends on iron ore price. Most likely, it will be lower in 2022 than in 2021. This would not be a huge assumption/discovery. One can look at iron ore price and dividend history.
However, Rio always paid and will pay good dividends comparing to other miners or other stocks. The business has solid foundation. One should look at mining assets, while analyzing a mining stock. Rio assets are much better than average. In a very bad, for miners, scenario, half miners worldwide will go bk, before Rio stops dividend.

Here's a recap of the recent announcement that $GMG signed an agreement to collaborate with Rio Tinto Group on energy-saving and storage solutions:

Under a non-binding term sheet, $GMG and Rio Tinto will:
    • Discuss trials of GMG's energy-saving products in existing and new applications, to deliver energy savings & associated carbon reductions to support Rio Tinto's decarbonization objectives
    • Explore supply of aluminum materials with an aim to optimize and accelerate battery development;
    • Investigate the use of G+Al batteries in various Rio Tinto mining and industrial applications as success could see significant performance enhancements for Rio's transition to low-carbon operations.

As both $GMG and Rio share a vision of a low carbon future, there is significant potential in their partnership to develop a green battery from low-carbon aluminum which could transform the way we supply and store energy.

Rio is one of the world's largest mining companies and is committed to leveraging leading technologies for efficient and low-carbon operations.

This collaboration adds another key element and represents another important step in developing $GMG's G+Al battery following the recent agreements with Wood for scaling graphene production and Bosch for automated battery production.

"It certainly is nice to see that Rio Tinto Group has managed to grow EPS by 18% per year over three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling."

    Canadian press reports today.
    Start of quote
Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) has produced a first batch of high purity scandium oxide at its commercial scale demonstration plant in Sorel-Tracy, becoming the first North American producer of this critical mineral, which is notably used in solide oxide fuel cells and in aluminium alloys.
The RTFT team has completed commissioning activities, and is now focusing on production ramp up to bring the plant to its nameplate capacity of three tonnes of scandium oxide per year, representing approximately 20% of the global market. The plant uses an innovative process developed by RTFT to extract high purity scandium oxide from the waste streams of titanium dioxide production, without the need for any additional mining.

Serbian press actively discusses whether and/or when Jadar project will be re-started. Government officials try to play sheep roles so far, explaining that they like the project, while having no idea about Rio plans. However, some information is relevant. UK does have investment treaty with Serbia protecting UK companies operating in the country. Also, Rio met with EU commission and informed them about the situation. Serbia is currently in process of trying to join EU.

"While high dividends are attractive, it’s not always sustainable. This tends to be the case with mining companies as they operate in economic cycles. Given that the global economy is expected to slow down this year, Rio’s top line is expecting some bruising. Additionally, China, its biggest customer, still has city-wide lockdowns in place to eradicate Covid. This has halted many construction projects and demand for iron ore. Therefore, I am doubtful that the blue-chip stock can continue generating a high level of passive income for investors."

I've been following RIO over the past +/- 18 months and considering starting a position at these price levels. Wondering if anyone here can tell me what the ADR fees per share are on RIO and what the tax withholding rate is to a USA investor of RIO. Thanks for any info.... Cheers!

Fitch has affirmed Rio’s Long-Term Issuer Default Rating at 'A' with Stable Outlook.
    Start of quote
The rating reflects Rio Tinto's large scale, strong cash flow generation linked to first and second quartile cost positions of key assets, robust demand outlook for iron ore, aluminium and copper supported by global energy-transition trends and a conservative balance sheet. The earnings outlook remains supportive, despite weakening global GDP growth amid high energy prices, large-scale lockdowns in China and increasing supply-chain disruptions linked to the Ukraine war.
    End of quote
Please note that Fitch applies, as it must as a rating agency, extremely conservative estimates to the company business. For example it uses following estimated prices for iron ore: USD110/t in 2022, USD85/t in 2023, USD75/t in 2024, and USD70/t in 2025. Today’s price is $146 in Singapore.
