Simon Leopold, with Raymond James, who rates the stock a Strong Buy, writes today that he’s been receiving “a number of questions” in advance of that report. Leopold acknowledges “sentiment among optical stocks is negative,” with China still a worry, following reports by Applied’s peers, Lumentum (LITE) and Oclaro (OCLR). Leopold goes through the various pieces of data he’s gleaned, including from the supply chain, and sees little to worry him overly much from other vendors such as M/A Com (MTSI) and Fabrinet (FN): Several suppliers (e.g., Oclaro, MACOM) have commented on poor profitability in the intra-data center transceiver market.
NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / February 7, 2017 / Optical stocks Lumentum Holdings and Oclaro were on fire on Tuesday, with both stocks closing the day up over 20%. Both stocks were shining after reporting ...
Two of the fiber-optic networking expert's sector peers reported strong results, showing signs of an end to last year's biggest headwinds.
Shares in optical device makers popped Tuesday on views that Oclaro's outlook could have signaled that the sector's downturn may bottom out in early 2018.
Shares of fiber-optic technology companies are bouncing back big time from yesterday’s market drop, helped in large part by the reports of Lumentum Holdings (LITE) this morning and Oclaro (OCLR) last night. As I mentioned earlier, Lumentum beat with its fiscal Q2 report, but missed with its forecast for the current quarter, but analysts are looking past that, focusing on what appears to be a bright outlook for VCSEL lasers for 3-D sensing, probably Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone and for other makers’ smartphones. Oclaro also missed with its own forecast yesterday afternoon, but the company’s commentary is also being taken as encouraging.
Oclaro and Lumentum kick off earnings for out-of-favor optical component stocks as analysts look for signs of green shoots in the sector.

Shares of fiber optic component suppliers are generally weaker today following a warning late Friday by contract electronics manufacturer Sanmina-SCI (SANM) that its revenue and profit will miss fiscal Q1 expectations, and next quarter as well, hit by hiccups in some of its projects, and by the impact of tax reform. Dave Kang of B. Riley & Co., who follows several of the optical names, warns that this means a tough Q1 for fiber names such as Lumentum (LITE), Oclaro (OCLR), and Ciena (CIEN). The warning is "additional evidence that C1Q18 will be weak” for communications components, writes Kang, "with a pick up in demand starting in C2H18." That, he notes, is similar to what the management of component vendor Inphi (IPHI) said at an investment conference last week.

One giant customer lifted Applied Optoelectronics in the first half, but even that shining star joined Oclaro and Finisar in gloomy market trends later on.
China has unveiled a five-year plan for building up its optical components industry, a move that could spell trouble for U.S. suppliers.
Shares of fiber-optic component supplier Oclaro (OCLR) today fell 19 cents, or 2.6%, to close at $7.05, after Needham & Co.’s Alex Henderson cut his rating on the shares from Buy to Hold, and cut his estimates, after concluding growth will be hard to come by in 2018. Street estimates are too high for the March quarter, and too high for the year, concludes Henderson, especially with growth in orders for components in China not likely to return to health until the second half of the year. Henderson cut his estimates for Oclaro for the fiscal year ending in June to $545.4 million in revenue and 52 cents EPS, from a prior $564.9 million and 55 cents.
Yesterday’s deal announced by fiber-optic component maker Finisar (FNSR) and Apple (AAPL) to boost manufacturing of “VCSEL” lasers for “3-D sensing” is being slightly mis-understood by investors, writes Alex Henderson, who follows the shares of Finisar and other component vendors of Needham & Co. today. Henderson, who has a Buy rating on Finisar, and a $25 price target, thinks actually the deal is better than people may realize. The mistake is that most characterized the arrangement as Apple “funding” Finisar’s spinning up manufacturing in a faculty in Sherman, Texas.
NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / December 14, 2017 / Stocks climbed higher on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates. Two stocks to see gains were Oclaro Inc. and Finisar. Finisar shares ...
Demand for optical components may be unpredictable these days, but there's nothing wrong with this sector in the long run.
China’s optical fiber market is coming back, but slowly, according to a note this morning from Rosenblatt Securities analyst Jun Zhang, who follows shares of laser vendor Oclaro (OCLR), Acacia Communications (ACIA), Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI), and other vendors. “Demand in China is stabilizing and slightly improving,” writes Zhang, "but we do not see a broad acceleration in China’s recovery yet. "Chinese vendors recently concluded 2018 component and module procure- ments.
