    Asia shares pin hopes on China opening, oil rallies

    The news helped oil prices firm as OPEC+ nations reaffirmed their output targets ahead of a European Union ban and price caps on Russian crude, which kick off on Monday. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan added 0.2%, after rallying 3.7% last week to a three-month top. Japan's Nikkei was near flat, while South Korea dipped 0.1%.

    UPDATE 2-Papua New Guinea PM Marape urges miners to go ahead with projects

    Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape on Monday urged mining investors to get on with developing their resources, pushing for more downstream processing in the country and more local employment. "You must show some progress, I don't want warehousing of licenses," Marape told a conference in Sydney, in comments directed at foreign investors. The biggest undeveloped mining resource in the Pacific nation is the Wafi-Golpu copper-gold project, owned by Australia's Newcrest Mining and South Africa's Harmony Gold Mining.
