U.S. prosecutors on Monday moved to dismiss insider trading charges against a hedge fund manager and a Florida entrepreneur after their star witness withdrew from an agreement to cooperate with authorities and decided not to testify against one of them. Federal prosecutors in Boston last year accused Kris Bortnovsky and Ryan Shapiro of placing illegal trades based on tips they received from a friend whose family has held investments and leadership roles in retailers like DSW Inc. That friend was David Schottenstein, the founder of a designer sunglasses company who in February pleaded guilty after agreeing to cooperate against the two Florida men.

Shares of Designer Brands (NYSE: DBI) were falling sharply from where they ended last week, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. While Designer Brands managed to report comparable sales growth of 3%, which came in on top of a near-41% rise in the year ago quarter, net sales of $865 million were just short of analyst forecasts of $866 million, while profits of $0.67 per share were a full nickel less than the $0.72 per share analysts anticipated. Designer Brands had been expecting full-year 2022 earnings of $2.05 per share to $2.15 per share, but took an axe to those estimates and now expects to generate just $1.75 per share to $1.80 per share, a 17% difference at the midpoint.
Shares of Designer Brands (NYSE: DBI) were taking a dive today after the footwear retailer missed estimates in its third-quarter earnings report and slashed its full-year guidance due to macroeconomic headwinds. Designer Brands, which is best known for its ownership of DSW, reported decent third-quarter results with comparable sales up 3% and overall revenue up 1.4% to $865 million. Higher inventory caused gross margin to fall 370 basis points to 33%, and so adjusted earnings per share decreased from $0.86 to $0.67.
