China's top airlines report quarterly profit after years of losses

BEIJING (Reuters) -China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines each reported first quarterly profits in more than three years on Friday, as a pickup in international flights complemented a recovery in the domestic market. The results, coupled with similarly encouraging figures from Air China, are helping to fan industry hopes for China's big three state carriers to finally step out of the difficulties brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. China Southern, based in the southern city of Guangzhou, reported third-quarter profit of 4.2 billion yuan ($573.89 million), compared with a loss of 1.0 billion yuan in the prior quarter, and a loss of 6.1 billion in the year-earlier quarter.

Qantas, China Eastern Airlines withdraw request to regulator to extend pact

(Reuters) -Qantas Airways said on Tuesday the company and China Eastern Airlines have withdrawn their application to the Australian competition regulator that sought to extend their joint business. The announcement comes a month after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said it planned to end a long-surviving partnership between the two airlines over claims it would lessen competition and provide the airlines a chance to hike airfare. The partnership allowed Qantas and China Eastern to coordinate passenger and cargo movement between Australia and China.

China Eastern Airlines to buy 100 C919 planes, aircraft's largest ever order

BEIJING (Reuters) -China Eastern Airlines said on Thursday it will buy another 100 C919 airplanes in a deal worth $10 billion at list prices, in what would be the largest ever order for the jet made by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC). The state-owned carrier said it had received a "substantial discount" for the deal and that the planes will be delivered in batches from 2024 to 2031. The list price for the C919 is $99 million but aircraft can be sold at discounts of up to 50%, especially for new models.
