The 20 Most Anticipated Games of 2014
- 1/19
TITANFALL (Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC | Release date: 3/11/14 ) – Supersoldiers and giant mechs collide in this frenetic shooter, which lets you effortlessly zip in and out of heavy-duty war machines while blasting away at the bad guys. Titanfall stunned crowds at E3 2013 – it walked away as the most-nominated game in the history of the Game Critics Awards – but we’ll see if it lives up to the hype in March.
- 2/19
TOM CLANCY’S THE DIVISION (PS4, Xbox One, PC | Release date: Q4 2014) – A disease has turned the U.S. on its head, triggering a total societal breakdown. It’s up to you to sort things out. Part tactical online shooter, part role-playing game, this engrossing hybrid looks amazing, powered on a fancy new engine that brings its chaotic world to life.
- 3/19
DESTINY (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 | Release date: 9/9/14) – The first post-Halo game from Bungie Studios comes pre-loaded with expectations, but so far it looks up to the task. A persistent online world teeming with interstellar adventures awaits those willing to dive in.
- 4/19
INFAMOUS: SECOND SON (PS4 | Release date: 3/21/14) – New system, new hero, same awesome open-world hijinks. Set in Seattle and starring Delsin, a Conduit wielding the power smoke, fire, and all that kind of thing, it’s one of the PS4’s flagship 2014 games.
- 5/19
WATCH DOGS (PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360, PC | Release date: Q2 2014) – Delays forced this highly-anticipated open-world romp out of the holidays and into 2014, but no matter: it still looks amazing, letting players wreak havoc on a world ruled by cameras, cell phones, and privacy issues. Sound familiar?
- 6/19
MARIO KART 8 (Wii U | Q2 2014) – It isn’t a Nintendo system until it gets its own Mario Kart. Good news for the Wii U, then, as the gravity-defying eighth game in the famous kart racing franchises powerslides to the console come Spring.
- 7/19
SOUTH PARK: THE STICK OF TRUTH (Xbox 360, PS3 | Release date: 3/4/14) – Another victim of the delay bug, this foul-mouthed role-playing game will (we hope) finally see the inside of a console this March. Built by the RPG experts at Obsidian Entertainment (Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2) and penned by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, it turns the boys into wizards, warriors and authoritahs.
- 8/19
DARK SOULS II (PS3, Xbox 360, PC | Release date: 3/11/14) – “Excited” isn’t exactly the right word for how we feel about the impending release of the crushingly-difficult Dark Souls II. “Distressed,” maybe, or perhaps “terrified.” But if you played the sublime Dark Souls, you’ll understand why we also can’t wait to get killed by this bad boy, again and again.
- 9/19
DRAGON AGE: INQUISITION (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, PC | Release date: Q3 2014) – The epic Dragon Age series returns in this huge RPG, said to blend gameplay elements from the excellent first game with features from the not-so-excellent sequel. The result should be excellent again.
- 10/19
METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 | Release date: 3/18/14) – Hideo Kojima can’t stop making Metal Gear games, and we can’t stop playing them. His next game is so large, however, that he decided to break it up into two parts. Ground Zeroes acts as the prologue to The Phantom Pain (due out TBA), serving as both an intro and a tutorial to the two-act game’s new mechanics. Sounds weird – just like Metal Gear.
- 11/19
THE WITCHER 3: WILD HUNT (PS4, Xbox One, PC | Release date: Q2 2014) – Grown-up gamers with a thirst for a massive, mature role-playing game should consider pre-ordering this epic sequel. A nonlinear story set in a cutthroat world said to be considerably larger than the legendary Skyrim? Cancel your plans. Like, all of them.
- 12/19
BROKEN AGE (PC, Mac, iOS, Android | Release date: 1/14 –Act One, 5/14 –Act Two) – Adventure fans, rejoice! Design legend Tim Schafer (Monkey Island, Grim Fandango) returns to his roots with this Kickstarted point-and-click throwback. You’ll play as a boy and a girl living parallel lives, one aboard a spaceship, the other in a village. Ten bucks they meet, somehow.
- 13/19
THE ORDER 1886 (PS4 | Release date: Q3 2014) – What if the descendants of the Knights of the Round Table were tasked with hunting monsters in foggy 19th century London? This PS4 exclusive created by the talented devs at Ready at Dawn Studios should answer that.
- 14/19
THE WITNESS (PS4, PC, iOS | Release date: Q1 2014) – It’s been a while since design guru Jonathan Blow blew minds with the breakthrough indie game Braid. His next game is just as mystifying, dropping players on an island teeming with puzzles.
- 15/19
THE ELDER SCROLLS ONLINE (PC, Mac, PS4, Xbox One | Release date: 4/4/14) – The jury’s still out on whether or not fans of single-player gems like Skyrim and Oblivion will take as kindly to the massively-multiplayer Elder Scrolls Online. It’s bold, big, and expensive, but will it be worth the subscription? We’ll find out in April.
- 16/19
SUPER SMASH BROS. U (Wii U, 3DS | Release date: TBA 2014) – The next iteration of Nintendo’s mascot smash-up is jam-packed with characters, from standbys Mario and Donkey Kong to the likes of Mega Man, Princess Zelda, and even the Wii Fit trainer.
- 17/19
DYING LIGHT (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, PC | Release date: TBA 2014) – Zombies are SO 2013, but this fast-paced survival game from Techland breaks the mold by turning you into a Parkour freak. Forget slowly barricading yourself in a flimsy cabin -- Dying Light encourages you to leap from drainpipe to rooftop as you scavenge for supplies and run circles around the undead.
- 18/19
TRANSISTOR (PS4, PC | Release Date: TBA 2014) – Supergiant Games knocked it out of the park with their 2011 debut, Bastion. They hope to avoid the sophomore slump with their follow-up, a stylish blend of action and strategy starring a young singer and an intelligent sword.
- 19/19
GAME OF THRONES (Platforms: TBA | Release date: TBA 2014) – Telltale Games proved they can more than handle a licensed property when they blew us all away with their incredible episodic take on The Walking Dead. Applying their choose-how-the-story-unfolds formula to a series as rife with intrigue as A Game of Thrones? We’d sell a dragon egg to play this one now.
