Worst feeling ever: waking up in the middle of the night because you’re hot and sweating through your clothes, sheets, comforter. But whether you’re a naturally sweaty sleeper or you live somewhere with hot summer (or year-round) temps, there’s a solution: cooling mattresses. Curious about what the best cooling mattresses are, and what to look for when shopping for one? We've got ya.
Most people sleep better at cooler temperatures, says Chris Winter, MD, medical director of the Sleep Medicine Center at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Virginia and author of The Sleep Solution, which is why investing in a cooling mattress might suit you if you have trouble getting Zs.

That said, how do cooling mattresses work, exactly? “Some cooling mattresses are made of materials that help keep the user cool,” Dr. Winter says. Specifically, certain layers built into the mattress (often made of copper or gel-infused) are designed to cycle heat away from the sleeper and, in turn, lower your body temperature, he says. There’s also mattress technology with electrical systems that pump water through the mattress so that it's actively cooled down into 50 degree temperatures, notes Dr. Winter.
If you’re contemplating which cooling mattress is right for you, Dr. Winter suggests trying them out in-store or getting a material sample from the company first. “Cooling properties are just one piece of the puzzle,” he says. “Ask yourself if the mattress is comfortable, supportive, the right size, adjustable, etc.” See a list of everything you should consider below.
