Sedans We Wish Automakers Would Turn Into Coupes

Sedans spawn coupes all the time, but sometimes, automakers decide against two-door variants for one reason or another. Here are a few new cars that deserve the coupe treatment.

If you want a two-door GT performance car from Audi, the closest you can get is the new S5 or RS 5. If you're hoping for anything bigger, you're out of luck. That's where an RS 7 coupe would fit in nicely.

If you have the cash, there's no better way to cruise through the city than with an ultra-luxury car. And there is no better ultra-luxury car than the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Sure, it's harder to maneuver, but that's something your driver has to worry about, not you. This new white and silver model should do nicely.

Electric cars are like new gadgets—people always want the latest and greatest version with the newest features. That's why you can buy an early, high-mileage Tesla Model S—which isn't all that different from a new one—for the price of a Miata.

If you want a big-winged car for the track with some straight-line speed, the Civic Type R can deliver. It has over 300 horsepower from its turbocharged inline-four, and a spoiler fit for The Fast & The Furious. This new 2019 model is painted blue, and it's up for sale right now.

How it drives is the most striking part of the Panamera. You expect it to be good. You don't expect it to be this good. This Panamera Turbo, which has no hybrid tech on board whatsoever, weighs in at approximately 4,400 pounds. That is not light. It's the sort of weight that'd make you expect the Panamera to be relaxing on the highway but floaty and unresponsive in corners.

As expected, it is relaxing on the highway; the ideal GT car. You can gobble up hours at high speed effortlessly. A road with corners is where you need to drive it, because it masks its heft so well that it defies physics. This is something Porsche knows how to hide thanks to supercar projects like the 918 Spyder.

Controlled and agile, with huge reserves of front-end grip from its 19-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, the rear-wheel-drive Stinger GT didn’t feel remotely out of its depth at the Ring. Only the worst of the Nordschleife’s horrific dips that cause extreme compression in every car’s suspension system questioned the Stinger’s resolve and body control. The steering feels natural, and the long, 114.4-inch wheelbase, coupled with a rear-driver’s limited-slip differential, makes neat little tail slides easy to hold.

When the WRX STI first came to the U.S. in 2004, its 300-horsepower flat-four was mind-blowing—a V8 Mustang of the same vintage only mustered 260. Now, the world has moved on and the STI has the same engine, albeit with 10 additional horsepower. Even still, it's good enough to earn a spot on the list.

Genesis hit it out of the park with its new entry-level luxury sport sedan, the G70. It's more fun than the competition, and looks great. Best of all, you can get it with a manual transmission. Sadly, if you want to pull out the best MPG, you'll have to settle for the four-cylinder automatic model. Here's one for sale on eBay right now.

We doubt it would have the swagger of, say, a 1961 Lincoln Continental coupe, but the latest Lincoln absolutely screams for a two-door version. Not only does the design lend itself to coupe form, it's also appropriate considering the Continental's history. If Lincoln wants to make a luxury comeback, it should drop the Continental's rear doors.

The Mirai, Toyota's hydrogen fuel cell car, used to be an uninspiring Prius-like compact. But for 2021, it's been turned into the striking rear-wheel-drive sedan you see here. The only thing that would make it better is a version with two fewer doors.

This Bentley may be named for the Mulsanne straight at Le Mans, but it's no race car. The $300,000-plus Mulsanne is the most luxurious vehicle Bentley can build. The rear seats are inspired by first-class airplane accommodations, and the options available are limited only by your imagination—and your budget. This one can be yours for the price of a well-optioned E-Class.

Currently, Volvo has zero coupes in its lineup, and that's a shame. The Polestar 1 is coming soon, but it'll be expensive and won't wear a Volvo badge. What Volvo should do is take the stunning new S60 sedan and transform it into a sporty coupe people will want.

With the CTS-V and ATS-V dead, Cadillac only has a single real performance-oriented car in its lineup: The CT6-V. It's a big sedan equipped with the company's new Blackwing twin-turbo V-8. Cadillac didn't bring back the CTS-V wagon for the last-gen car, but it can still make things right by giving us a wagon version of the CT6.

The Giulia Quadrifoglio is one of the best-driving sedans on sale right now, but it's lacking one major thing: a two-door version. Cars like the M4, RS5, and C63 S Coupe mean there's certainly a market for it. All Alfa has to do is make it.

Any Accord will be reliable and comfortable, but only an Accord sedan equipped with a six-speed manual remains a stirring enthusiast car. It's the latest—and dare we say, the last—carrier of our favorite Honda genes: a competent four-cylinder engine, a manual shifter as precise and smooth as a Swiss watch, and surprisingly eager handling.

If Honda won't give us an Accord coupe, then we'd settle for a coupe version of the Acura TLX. Specify it in A-Spec guise and lay on some of that NSX-sourced Valencia Red Pearl paint, and you've got yourself a solid two-door.

FCA has done a great job of differentiating the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Charger, focusing more on luxury and comfort than handling in the 300. But if Dodge gets the Challenger, why doesn't Chrysler get a big, muscular coupe too? A two-door, comfort-tuned Chrysler 300 Coupe is something we could get behind.

The Miata isn't the only Mazda that's fun to drive. The company's entire lineup offers enjoyable driving experiences no matter what sort of format you're looking for. The Mazda 6 mid-size sedan is a perfect example. This one is brand new, and can be yours.

With the Volkswagen Alltrack and Sportwagen going out of production, Volkswagen of America's lineup is in desperate need of a new wagon. We think giving its nicest sedan, the Arteon, the long-roof treatment is the right call. With rumors and spy shots of the car on the internet, we might just get our wish.

Ever since Jaguar discontinued the XK, there hasn't been a big two-door grand-tourer in its lineup (the gorgeous F-Type is more of a pure sports car). Removing a couple of doors from the current XJ sedan would fill that vacancy perfectly.
