Inside the revamped Mercedes G-class

Both of the newly-announced Mercedes G-class models resemble the initial G60 released in 1979 but come with modern twists- as you would expect for an estimated sticker price of £80,000.

The G-class is a 4x4 powerhouse which has been voted off-roader of the year a number of times.

The G350 BlueTEC and the G63 are identical aesthetically but have slight differences under the hood.

While the G350 BlueTEC runs on a V6 diesel, the G63 AMG houses a V8 biturbo engine. The latter model guzzles petrol down at a rate of 20.4 miles per gallon.

The revamped G's savvy features include parking sensors, radar-guided cruise control and blind spot warnings.

The instrument panel has a TFTcolour display, part of the COMAND Online infotainment system which offers a navigation system with special additional off-road functions, a voice-operated control system and Bluetooth wireless connectivity.

The extensive G-class range has been adapted for a number of different purposes- most oddly as a Popemobile in 1980. The current Popemobile is an M-class Mercedes-Benz, most recently seen on Benedict XVI's tour of Brazil.

Given a lack of green credentials the G-Class will come into the top UK car tax bracket- at a cost of £475 a year.

Slight external alterations include LED daytime running lamps and new exterior mirrors for all engine variants.

Mercedes claim the G-class "remains true to its down-to-earth, unmistakable style."

On the outside both G-class models have red brake callipers and 20-inch wheels.

"Our G-Class has been a force to be reckoned with for the last 33 years," said Mercedes-Benz head, Dr Dieter Zetsche. "In its latest evolutionary stage, it offers state-of-the-art, powerful engines, a further improved range of luxurious appointments and the very latest safety features, as well, of course, as its now legendary off-road capabilities."
