Range Rover Evoque Convertible: Have We Reached Peak SUV?

The list of convertible SUVs runs as follows: The Jeep Wrangler, the recently ended Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet, and that’s about it. The long roof of an SUV simply takes up too much storage space when turned from metal to canvas—and storage space is the main reason people buy SUVs. Look no further than the Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible for the compromises in style that come from trying to fold a long-roof vehicle fashionably.

That said, the Evoque already draws a different clientele than most Range Rovers; it’s too small and too fashionable to be used as an everyday hauler. For the wealthy singles or couples who want both an SUV and the occasional full-sun experience, why not offer two, two, two vehicles in one?

The top of the topless Evoque can lower in 18 seconds, and rise in 21 seconds, at speeds up to 30 mph. Like the Mazda Miata, the roof mostly acts as its own tonneau, folding flat with a couple of helpers. Roll bars pop out in case of trouble, and Range Rover says the roof is thoroughly sound and weatherproofed.

Such fashion does come with compromises. Cargo space shrinks to 8.9 cubic feet, or less than a Chevy Corvette Stingray Convertible. (Of course there’s a pass-thru for skis.) The only engine choice—the 240-hp turbo 2-liter—now has to move 4,300 lbs. of vehicle, slowing the rush to 60 mph to 7.8 seconds.

And the Evoque starts at $50,475, or roughly $10,000 more than a metal-roofed Evoque. You can’t buy a modern four-seat luxury convertible for $10,000, let alone one that can ford 19.7 inches of water. And after it goes on sale next year, the Evoque will certainly be one of the most distinctive vehicles in the world. In that, I have unshakeable faith.
