The day a whole city fell silent

Three days after the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, it followed with a second bomb on Nagasaki, 68 years ago today. After the bomb exploded, Japanese officials didn't realize what had happened until the city fell eerily silent, as the national broadcaster suddenly went off the air and telegraph and telephone lines went dead. The bombs killed a combined 120,000 people outright, tens of thousands more through injury and radiation sickness.
