The highest-paid YouTube stars of 2016

A new generation of stars has been born solely on the internet.

Just 11 years ago, a video-sharing website called YouTube was founded. Now, the company is worth tens of billions of dollars and the stars of some of its most popular videos are raking in millions.

Forbes has compiled the site's biggest earners in 2016, based on figures from Nielsen, IMDB, as well as interviews with agents, managers, lawyers, insiders and the stars themselves.

Many of them have leveraged their YouTube fame to get spots in advertisements, sell merchandise, as well as make appearances in more traditional forms of media.
