The biggest uniform partnership deals in sports

Adidas and the NHL In 2015, Adidas struck a seven-year deal with the NHL to make uniforms for all 30 NHL teams. According to a source who spoke to TSN, the NHL's previous deal saw Reebok, the previous jersey suppliers, paying the league about $35 million per season and the same source said the rights fee would double for the Adidas deal. Nike and the NBA Last year, Nike struck a deal with the NBA that will see them supply jerseys for all teams beginning in the 2017-18 season. Terms weren't disclosed for the eight-year deal, but according to sources, the deal is worth roughly $1 billion. Previously, Adidas had an 11-year deal with the NBA, but elected not to extend that partnership, which began in 2006. The trademark Nike swoosh will appear on the uniforms, which marks the first time they will feature the manufacturer's logo. (Getty)

Adidas, Chevrolet and Manchester United While many North American leagues are still resistant to advertising appearing on jerseys, it's something that's been embraced in by soccer teams in Europe and has resulted in big bucks. Adidas pays Manchester United £75 million (about US$95 million) to outfit the team, and Chevrolet pays another £47 million (about $59 million USD) to have its logo featured on the front. Hudson's Bay Company and the Canadian Olympic Committee HBC has been outfitting Team Canada since 2005 for Winter Olympic games, in an agreement worth approximately $100 million. The eight-year deal was extended in 2011, covering all summer, winter, Pan-American and youth Olympic games. However, exclusivity is what really pays, and the COC has had multiple clothing retailers carry Olympic products in recent years, including Sport Chek for Olympic-branded shoes, and lululemon bikinis for the beach volleyball players. Adidas and the CFL Teams unveiled new uniforms earlier this year, courtesy of their new supplier, Adidas. The new deal came as part of the move to pull sister brand Reebok out of all sports sponsorship apparel and focus on the fitness brand instead. The value of the deal hasn't been disclosed, but there's no question that CFL jerseys are big money: in the 2010-11 season, the Saskatchewan Roughriders alone sold more than $10 million worth of merchandise for their centennial season. Nike and the NFL For a reported average annual payment of $220 million, Nike has the privilege of creating uniforms for the NFL. While there are no specific figures as to how much Nike makes in return, it's clearly a worthwhile investment: the NFL Players Association, which takes a cut of all jersey sales, said jersey revenue reached $150 million in Nike's first season as team outfitter. And Nike appears to be looking for even more ways to get those jersey dollars. In September, they unveiled a line of Color Rush jerseys that would be worn by the teams on Thursday night games.
