Construction has recently began for what will be the world's largest
ship lock, the Deurganckdock lock. To make way for the ever expanding
needs of the port to be able to handle the world's largest ships, the
lock will be as wide as a 19-lane highway. In the construction three
times as much steel will be used as was needed for the Eiffel tower, and
the amount of concrete will be enough for a building 35 floors high and
covering an area the size of a football field.
