Ziggy Marley Remembers Life with His Reggae Icon Dad Bob: He Was ‘Just My Father’

The world remembers Bob Marley as a music icon — but to his eldest son, he was just Dad.

“I grew up with Dad before he was this well-known person. I was born before he was famous, you know?” Ziggy Marley, 48, tells PEOPLE. “We grew up seeing just my father, a working musician with ideas and messages and ups and downs.”

Twenty years after the legend died, he was awarded a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award for his contributions to music, which is still beloved. Bob passed those sonic talents and his spiritual Rastafari lifestyle on to his son. And despite his father’s legacy, Ziggy never felt the need to try and fill his dad’s shoes.

“I didn’t feel any pressure,” he says. “It was just our life.”

Active in the industry since the late-’70s, Ziggy fronted The Melody Makers band until the early aughts and released his solo debut in 2003. Over the years, Ziggy has won four Grammys, and in May, he released his sixth album, Ziggy Marley.

There’s at least one thing Ziggy didn’t inherit from his father, though: his culinary skills. In recent years, the singer has found a second act as a celebrity foodie, launching a line of hemp seeds and flavored coconut oils in 2012 then, this month, releasing his first recipe collection, Ziggy Marley and Family Cookbook.

The book gives a look into the Jamaica native’s life in the kitchen, where he cooks for his family: wife Orly, 44, and their four kids, Judah, 11, Gideon, 9, Abraham, 5, and Isaiah, 7 months. (Ziggy is also the father to three adult children from previous relationships: Daniel, 27, Justice, 24, and Zuri, 21.)

Bob “wasn’t a big cook,” Ziggy recalls in the new issue of PEOPLE. “He loved juice. When I was growing up, he used to make a lot of concoctions, like protein shakes. I wouldn’t like it, but I’d drink it because he told me to!”
