You need a new $25 cord to hook your iPhone up to the new MacBook Pro

Apple finally treated its laptop users to a new MacBook Pro today. Among the new “touch bar” feature and the usual slimming, nipping and tucking, Apple’s new offerings lack something we’ve grown accustomed to since the iBook and iMac debuted—the classic USB port.

Instead, the new Apple notebooks feature up to four new ports, the Thunderbolt 3. Using the USB-C shape, the Thunderbolt 3 is Apple’s go-to cable now, convenient for everything since it’s small, fast, and carries power. It’s also completely reversible; both ends are the same and there is no upside-down.

Unfortunately, these new ports mean you’re going to need new cables or adapters if you want to plug your iPhone into the new “touch bar” MacBook Pros, which will start at $$1,799. Current iPhones ship with Lightning to classic USB-A cables and a USB-A AC power adapter, and to fit one of those into a Thunderbolt, you’re going to need a USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 to Lightning cable or adapter.

The cables cost $25 in the Apple Store. There’s also third-party companies that make adapters that range between $10 and $20. Bottom line: You’re gonna need a bigger cable drawer.
