This Woman's Record Attempt Probably Won't Impress You

A California woman is this week hoping to set a world record for the "Longest Continuous Journey by a New Licensee."

Assuming she successfully earns her California motorcycle license tomorrow (1 June), Deena Mastracci will set forth straight from the Department of Motor Vehicles on a 9,000-mile motorcycle adventure that will see her heading north to Alaska before turning around and pointing her newly purchased BMW F800GT toward Pennsylvania.

Mastracci has no prior on-road experience of riding a motorcycle, though according to a website promoting her attempt she has taken a track-based skills course. And she spent a few weeks doing parking lot drills.

Oh, and she's set five transcontinental driving records in an electric vehicle. In addition, she's joined her fiance, Carl Reese, in setting records for the "Fastest Time for Crossing the USA in an Electric Vehicle” and for “Fastest Double Transcontinental Trip (LA-NYC-LA)."

If the name Carl Reese sounds familiar, it's because RideApart reported on his epic cross-country motorcycle ride earlier this year. In that attempt, Reese rode from Los Angeles to New York City in less than 39 hours.

It's unclear how long Mastracci's trip is expected to take.

Regardless of whether Mastracci's feat sounds all that impressive, she is using the stunt to help draw attention to a good cause: the Motorcycle Relief Project. A nonprofit charity, the Motorcycle Relief Project helps veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and other injuries. The group arranges multi-day motorcycle tours and other activities, and also offers counseling for veterans in an effort to decrease suicides.

Additionally, Mastracci says she hopes her ride will inspire other women who may feel intimidated by the idea of riding a motorcycle.
