American Airlines to Replace Plastic Straws with Wood Stir Sticks

The Company will instead serve drinks with biodegradable, eco-friendly straws and wood stir sticks. American Airlines will also begin transitioning to all eco-friendly flatware within lounges. In November 2018, the Company will replace plastic straws/stir sticks that are offered during onboard beverage service with a stir stick made of sustainable and environmentally-friendly bamboo. With these changes, American Airlines will eliminate more than 71,000 pounds of plastic per year.

Commenting on the announcement, Jill Surdek, Vice President, Flight Service at American Airlines, expressed that the airline is very excited and proud to share this initiative with its team members and customers. Surdek added that American Airlines is cognizant of its impact on the environment and remains committed to doing its part to sustain the planet for future generations of travelers.

American Airlines' Environmental Sustainability Efforts

American Airlines' onboard environmental sustainability efforts go back to 1989, when the airline's flight attendants started the industry's first onboard recycling program. Through this program, American Airlines recycles hundreds of thousands of pounds of aluminum per year, with proceeds going to The Wings Foundation, which is a charitable organization administered by active American Airlines flight attendants to assist fellow flight attendants in times of need. American Airlines also transitioned away from plastic foam cups to paper cups in 2015.

Starbucks' Move to Eliminate the Use of Plastic Straws by 2020

On July 09, 2018, Starbucks Coffee Co., a large food and beverage retailer, announced that it would eliminate single-use plastic straws by 2020 from its more than 28,000 Company-operated and licensed stores by making a straw-less lid or alternative-material straw options available, around the world. It is anticipated that the move would eliminate more than one billion plastic straws per year from Starbucks stores.

Starbucks has designed, developed, and manufactured a straw-less lid, which will become the standard for all iced coffee, tea, and espresso beverages. Starbucks goal to eliminate plastic straws by 2020 from their stores globally represents the Company's forward thinking in tackling the material waste challenge in totality.
