The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have shared a heartfelt statement following the shocking murder of MP Sir David Amess.

William and Kate paid tribute to Sir David on Twitter, sending their "thoughts and prayers" to his family, friends and colleagues. The much-loved Conservative politician died after being stabbed in his constituency in Essex. The royal couple signed off their statement personally with their initials: "W & C".

"We are shocked and saddened by the murder of Sir David Amess, who dedicated 40 years of his life to serving his community, " their message read. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues. W & C."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson described Sir David Amess as "one of the kindest, nicest, and most gentle people in politics". The PM laid flowers with Labour leader Keir Starmer at the scene where Amess died, as they paid tribute to their colleague.

Sir David was stabbed as he met constituents at a regular surgery at Belfairs Methodist Church on Friday morning (October 15). Essex Police have arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of murder.

The politician had been an MP since 1983 and was married with five children. He was a strong supporter of animal rights, campaigned against fuel poverty, and raised awareness of endometriosis.

The duke and duchess are due to take part in the inaugural Earthshot Prize this weekend, which is scheduled to be broadcast on Sunday, 17th October.
