Will 'Captain America: Civil War' slay the box office?

3 things to watch for this week

Friday is a massive day for retail. JCPenney (JCP), Macy’s (M), Kohl’s (KSS), and Nordstrom (JWN) all report first-quarter earnings before the bell. All four stocks are down double-digits over the last month as department stores are increasingly facing challenges like keeping up with e-commerce demand and an excess of retail space.

And in other retail news, don’t forget April’s retail sales report will be released by the Census Bureau on Friday. This data cover the sales of goods and food services (like restaurant meals). With higher gas prices and a rebound in vehicle sales, we could see topline retail sales notch their best pace of growth since March 2015, according to a note from RBC.

Captain America: Civil War kicks off the summer movie season, but did it manage to sweep the weekend box office? With a star-studded cast including Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlet Johansson, and Don Cheadle, the film hit theaters on Friday and is expected to smash records. Fellow Marvel Universe film Deadpool clocked $152.2 million over Presidents’ Day weekend (it was the biggest opening ever for an R-rated movie). Industry experts expect the film to have opened upwards of $200 million at the U.S. box office.
