Why Are Trump Fans Boycotting the New ‘Star Wars’?

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” — the latest film in the epic space opera franchise — may take place “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away,” but that’s not stopping some supporters of President-elect Donald Trump from calling for a boycott of the movie due to its “anti-Trump scenes.”

Twitter user Jack Posobiec, the special projects director for advocacy group Citizens for Trump, seems to have spearheaded the boycott movement — #DumpStarWars — with this Dec. 8 tweet:

“Star Wars writers rewrote and reshot Rogue One to add in Anti Trump scenes calling him a racist. Disgusting. # DumpStarWars”

According to CNBC, Chris Weitz, one of the screenwriters for “Rogue One” — which will be released in theaters on Dec. 15 — says Posobiec’s allegations are totally unfounded and even went so far as to call him a liar.

Still, the #DumpStarWars movement gained steam with some Trump fans.

Twitter user Cynthia tweeted:

“Please keep your kids from seeing the movie. This liberal propaganda is leftist- fascism & dangerous.”

According to The Wrap, although “Rogue One” did undergo extensive reshoots this past summer, “there is no evidence whatsoever that any of the changes made to Rogue One were politically motivated.”

It is worth mentioning that the Star Wars franchise has never shied away from political overtones. For example, the uniforms for the Imperial Officers were designed to mimic Nazi uniforms.
