Why We Like The Returns At Altria Group (NYSE:MO)

To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at the ROCE trend of Altria Group (NYSE:MO) we really liked what we saw.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Altria Group:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.43 = US$12b ÷ (US$37b - US$8.3b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2022).

So, Altria Group has an ROCE of 43%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 19% earned by companies in a similar industry.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us

Altria Group has not disappointed in regards to ROCE growth. The data shows that returns on capital have increased by 69% over the trailing five years. That's a very favorable trend because this means that the company is earning more per dollar of capital that's being employed. In regards to capital employed, Altria Group appears to been achieving more with less, since the business is using 25% less capital to run its operation. A business that's shrinking its asset base like this isn't usually typical of a soon to be multi-bagger company.

In Conclusion...

In a nutshell, we're pleased to see that Altria Group has been able to generate higher returns from less capital. Since the total return from the stock has been almost flat over the last five years, there might be an opportunity here if the valuation looks good. That being the case, research into the company's current valuation metrics and future prospects seems fitting.
