Where to Find Popular Tire Brands
Consumer Reports rates more than 150 different tires from 25 major tire brands. And though those brands cover the bulk of the market, you'll probably find many other tire brands online or at your local retailer alongside such well-known names as Bridgestone, Goodyear, and Michelin, which dominate the original equipment market (OEM).
Other familiar tire brands we've tested include BFGoodrich, Continental, Cooper, Dunlop, Falken, Firestone,, General, Hankook, Kumho, Maxxis, Nitto, Nokian, Pirelli, Sumitomo, Toyo, Uniroyal, and Yokohama. In total, the tires we've tested covers about 80 percent of the passenger-car replacement-tire market in the U.S.
Several less-common tire brands, such as Nankang and Sunny, serve as price leaders. Other brands, including Sears Diehard tires, are private labels manufactured for retailers. And then there are the less familiar secondary brands that manufacturers use to broaden coverage. For example, Cooper makes and markets Mastercraft tires.
There are hundreds of brands worldwide. Below you'll find a listing of common tire brands and the retailers where you can find them. (The brands included here were found online for tire size 215/60R16, a common passenger-car tire size and one used in our testing.)
Your best bet in choosing replacement tires is to stick with a brand tested by Consumer Reports. We can tell you how it compares with its key rivals in braking, comfort, handling, hydroplaning, noise, and snow traction. We also can predict the tire's tread life in miles based on our extensive treadwear test program.
