  • Jess Lingard scores superb winning goal against club where he thrived on loan

  • Luke Shaw concedes stoppage-time penalty by blocking cross with arm

  • Mark Noble comes on as substitute and misses spot kick with only involvement

Just when it felt the drama would be all about Jesse Lingard scoring against the club he was loaned to last season and who desperately wanted to sign him and Cristiano Ronaldo striking again but fuming after two penalty appeals were turned down, West Ham topped all that. They did so as only, their fans will lament, West Ham can.

“Fortunes always hiding”, or so the song goes, but although they could curse their luck at missing out on Lingard – whose fine late goal after coming on as a substitute won this tight encounter – they were the architects of their own downfall with what can only be summed up as a modern-day penalty farce.

Time was up. It was deep into injury-time when Andriy Yarmolenko’s cross struck the outstretched arm of Luke Shaw. Referee Martin Atkinson initially did not react but was told there was a VAR check and the spot-kick was rightly given. So far, dramatic enough, but then West Ham manager David Moyes took the fateful decision to bring on club captain Mark Noble. Declan Rice had the ball in his hands but he had missed his last penalty – in fact West Ham had missed four of their previous five – and handed it over. It was the 95th minute.

And so Noble’s first touch was to drive the ball to David De Gea’s left and the goalkeeper dived to push it away. It was the first penalty Noble had missed in five years – and the first that De Gea had saved in that time (40 in total including penalty shoot-outs) and he was mobbed at the end by relieved team-mates. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also ran on to the pitch.

In fact it is seven years since De Gea had saved a penalty in the Premier League (this was the 22nd since then) and he looked as stunned as Noble who dropped to his knees even if the responsibility clearly fell on Moyes who is such an experienced manager but seemed swayed by the notion of bringing on a spot-kick specialist. With that United stretched their run of away league games without defeat to a record 29 and are only off the top of the table on goal difference.

Was Moyes trying to be too clever? Did he simply not trust any of his other players? It just looked wrong as Noble ran on. He may have scored 38 of his last 42 penalties, Moyes may have asked him if was up for it (what else would he reply but yes?) but Noble rushed it and he did not touch the ball again before the final whistle.

The Premier League really is the gift that keeps on giving. There were so many storylines in this match but, as ever, the focus was on Ronaldo who, five minutes after West Ham had taken the lead, drew United level. It is four goals in three games for him since his homecoming and there is a magnetic quality that endures. He attracts attention, he attracts the ball, he is always a threat.

On the day that Jimmy Greaves, who ended his top-flight career at West Ham, passed away, which was marked by a minute’s applause and black armbands being worn, one of only two players who had scored more goals than him in Europe’s top five leagues struck again. Only Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have scored more than Greaves’ 366 league goals and Greaves retired when he was 31.

For Ronaldo’s goal, Bruno Fernandes turned provider with an inswinging cross from the left that was met by his compatriot who improvised by guiding a volley with the outside of his right foot. Lukasz Fabianski parried only for Ronaldo to side-foot home the rebound.

It looked simple but it owed everything to Ronaldo’s athleticism and clever movement as he held his position, letting the defenders come to him, and then darted forward to meet the ball. Soon afterwards his dancing feet, as Kurt Zouma stood in front of him, even had the West Ham fans chuckling before he laid the ball off.

If United were unfortunate in the way they conceded they had already been served warning. Despite United dominating possession the best two chances had fallen to West Ham before they took the third. Vladimir Coufal’s back-heel was collected by Jarrod Bowen, playing as a central striker in the absence of the suspended Michail Antonio, who picked out Said Benrahma on the edge of the ‘D’. He took a touch and attempted to bend the ball around Raphael Varane with it striking the defender in the midriff leaving De Gea wrong-footed.

Before that Fabianski had superbly touched a Fernandes volley on to the post and Solskjaer understandably argued that his team continued to take the game even if West Ham were always in it. But, boy, does Solskjaer have options. He brought on £73 million winger Jadon Sancho and Lingard who was given a standing ovation by some West Ham fans who must have taken their seats in trepidation.

They were proved right. Inside the area, Lingard collected possession, pushed the ball on to his right foot and curled a wonderful shot high beyond goalkeeper Fabianski. It came amidst all the penalty drama. Three times United demanded a spot-kick with the most compelling case coming as Ronaldo went over Coufal’s outstretched leg but the referee remained unmoved. He did react at the other end but West Ham failed to capitalise.

As it happened

03:02 PM

Let's not forget the quality of Lingard's winning goal

02:56 PM

FT: West Ham 1 Man Utd 2

That was an incredible finish: a sensational Lingard goal against his former team-mates, a penalty not given to Ronaldo, a penalty correctly awarded to West Ham, and David De Gea denying Mark Noble who took the penalty with his first kick after coming on. A big three points for Man Utd.

02:54 PM

SAVED BY DE GEA!

The substitution did not work, just like in the Euros final the player coming on cold has missed. It was a poor penalty, to De Gea's left and the right height.

02:53 PM

Penalty West Ham!

Man Utd are incredulous, but the complaint they should have is the fact Ronaldo did not get his penalty at the other end. And would you believe it....Mark Noble is coming on to take it! What a moment.

02:52 PM

On pitch review!

Atkinson goes across to the screen to check....

02:51 PM

92 minutes

Now West Ham want a penalty for handball against Shaw! His arm was outstretched and he blocked a West Ham cross. I think West Ham are going to get this decision...Var checking.

02:50 PM

91 minutes

Ronaldo wants another penalty, and he may have a case this time. Zouma completely missed the ball and cleaned out the player, but amazingly Var has checked and says no penalty. West Ham do have a free-kick just inside the Man Utd half.

02:49 PM

Three minutes off added time

Can West Ham muster a response?

02:49 PM

GOOOOOAALLLLL! Jess Lingard scores another goal at the London Stadium

West Ham were looking comfortable, but one of their starts from last season has returned to haunt them. Lingard received the ball on the left edge of the penalty area, shifted it inside Zouma and unleashed a right-footed shot into the far top corner. Great response to his Champions League error in mid-week.

02:47 PM

89 minutes

West Ham now quite deep in their half as Man Utd push for the winning goal. Fernandes floats one into the box but Zouma clears, Fabianski could have communicated and claimed the ball. Gives United a chance to sustain the attack.

02:46 PM

87 minutes

A moment of hesitation between Coufal and Fabianski but the defender takes responsibility and hammers it away. Man Utd about to bring on Nemanja Matic - doesn't seem the ideal introduction when chasing a winning goal - he replaces Fred. Lanzini on for Benrahma.

02:44 PM

85 minutes

Man Utd working the ball patiently from side to side, but little penetration so far. Sancho, who has been quiet since coming on, gets a couple of touches on the left. Lingard's cross is claimed by Fabianski, with Ronaldo asking for a penalty again, this time for a shirt pull from Cresswell. West Ham standing firm and Manuel Lanzini is about to come on for them.

02:41 PM

83 minutes

Fernandes tries to push a pass into the West Ham penalty area but it was astray, and Ogbonna clears. Rice then does well to win a throw by kicking the ball off Wan-Bissaka's shins.

02:40 PM

81 minutes

Zouma in the right place in the box again, and then Man Utd get themselves in a mess at the back and concede a corner. Varane a hammered a back-pass towards De Gea and he could not prevent it going behind.

Bowen delivers well but it's a good header away by Maguire and then Fornals' snap shot from 25 yards flies a few yards wide.

02:37 PM

79 minutes

Fernandes teases a wicked ball across the six-yard line and Zouma did well to clear for a corner with an own goal staring him in the face. A poor touch from Fred lets West Ham escape and clear their lines but United are back in possession. Good defending from Ogbonna after Sancho's flick around the corner.

02:36 PM

77 minutes

Ronaldo is furious, he believes he should have a penalty! He is wrong though, because after squaring up Coufal in the box and pushing the ball past him it was Ronaldo who ran into the legs of the defender. The West Ham fans are loving it.

02:34 PM

75 minutes

A couple of magnificent driving runs from Rice helps West Ham transition up the pitch and gain territory. They are enjoying a second wind in this match. Fernandes had a meek shot on target from distance, but the home team are looking the more likely.

02:31 PM

73 minutes

Double sub from Solskjaer: Greenwood off, Sanch on. Pogba off, Lingard on. Can he make up for his mid-week mistake?

02:31 PM

71 minutes

Coufal's cross is headed clear by Wan-Bissaka at the back post, and then Ronaldo produces an overhead kick to clear Cresswell's cross out of his own box. West Ham started to sustain attacks and put Man Utd's defence under pressure, but then it is released when Bowen fouls Varane.

02:28 PM

69 minutes

West Ham making a change: Yarmolenko replaces Vlasic. From the second phase of a set-piece, Soucek and Wan-Bissaka are in a tangle in the penalty area, both of them ending up on the turf. Atkinson gave the foul Man Utd's way, but replays suggest Wan-Bissaka may have slid into Soucek. Var approves of the decision and we carry on.

02:24 PM

65 minutes

Benrahma wanted a foul given against Fred when he was about to turn into midfield space but Martin Atkinson waved it away. That sense of injustice has the West Ham fans in good voice again. All been a little flat in this half from both teams.

02:23 PM

63 minutes

Play stopped for a few minutes after McTominay blocks Benrahma's shot with his face. Being assessed by the doctors but looks like he will be alright to carry on. In fact, he quickly jogs back on. Andriy Yarmolenko is about to come on for West Ham.

02:19 PM

61 minutes

Fernandes drives in a low cross from the right but Coufal got in front of Ronaldo to put the ball behind for a corner. Soucek wins a header against Pogba in the box, but United sustain the attack. Fernandes' cross from the left is deflected behind for another corner.

02:17 PM

58 minutes

Maguire blocks Bowen's shot before Pogba fouls Soucek in midfield. West Ham getting into promising positions but their final ball is not accurate enough at the moment. The tempo of United's football has slowed.

02:15 PM

56 minutes

Soucek strong against Pogba. After a nervy first few minutes of the half, West Ham are starting to look more comfortable in their defensive shape. Jesse Lingard is warming up in front of the fans he delighted last season, and gets a great reception.

02:12 PM

53 minutes

West Ham give a corner away cheaply after Cresswell misses a simple pass back to Ogbonna. Maguire's glancing header flies over the bar. Cresswell tries to atone for his mistake by sending Vlasic over the top but De Gea was off his line sharply to gather the ball.

02:10 PM

51 minutes

Ronaldo has had seven shots on goal in just 50 odd minutes so far. That was a promising West Ham attack involving Fornals and Bowen but the midfielder's backheel flew past the near post. The game is opening up now.

02:08 PM

49 minutes

Bowen with a tame shot from the corner of the box which is straight at De Gea. Good scrapping in midfield from McTominay before Greenwood wins the ball in a dangerous are, but it's good Rice defending against Pogba. Frantic stuff. United now have a corner after good work from Shaw.

02:06 PM

47 minutes

You'd think Man Utd would spend this half laying siege to the West Ham goal and they have already created their first chance of the half. Ronaldo was almost clean through but Fabianski rushed out to save well. Coufal tries to lead the West Ham counter and McTominay turns the ball behind for a corner.

02:04 PM

The players are back out for the second half

No changes for either side at the break.

01:51 PM

Zouma impressive for West Ham

That was a very encouraging league debut for his new club. Gave as good as he got in the battle against Ronaldo and was strong on crosses.

01:50 PM

Another venue conquered

01:48 PM

HT: West Ham 1 Man Utd 1

The home team had a strong spell before their opening goal but you cannot begrudge Man Utd their equaliser. Their football has not always been fluent, but they managed seven shots on target in that 45 minutes and were threatening a second before the whistle blew.

01:47 PM

Two minutes of added time

Man Utd have another corner after Fernandes' miscued cross was tipped over by Fabianski. West Ham clear and streak away on the counter attack but Vlasic's cross from the right is hammered away by Wan-Bissaka. Half time approaches.

01:45 PM

45 minutes

Ronaldo throws in a few stepovers in front of Zouma and Man Utd have West Ham pushed back. Patient attacking play from the away side but West Ham are staying disciplined. Pogba's shot from range deflects wide for a corner.

01:43 PM

Ronaldo's equaliser

01:43 PM

43 minutes

Half a chance for West Ham and Vlasic. Cresswell in acres of space down the left and he whips a low cross in, but Vlasic had run beyond the near post and could to deflect the ball on target.

01:42 PM

41 minutes

Great work from Bowen to carry the ball up the pitch, and past Cristiano Ronaldo, and win a throw in in Man Utd territory. The away team soon win the ball back and enjoy another spell of possession. Good one-touch play down the right, Greenwood feeds Ronaldo whose shot from a tight angle is saved by Fabianski.

01:39 PM

39 minutes

West Ham will be satisfied if they can get into half time level. Zouma and Ronaldo are having a tremendous ding-dong, this time the defender beats him in the air. McTominay does well to reach the byline but the pull-back is just behind Ronaldo.

01:37 PM

37 minutes

Another excellent response to falling behind from Man Utd, just when the game looked in danger of drifting away from them. Now they need to maintain the pressure on the West Ham goal. The home team have a throw in on halfway.

01:36 PM

GOOOOALLL! Ronaldo has his goal

Man Utd have played well since conceding, and they have the equaliser. Fernandes' cross from the left finds Ronaldo in the six yard box, just about onside. Fabianski saves his first attempt turned towards goal with his right foot but the ball dropped for him to score the rebound.

01:34 PM

34 minutes

West Ham living dangerously, but that is magnificent defending from Zouma. McTominay split the defence with a great through ball into the left channel for Ronaldo. First touch was not the best be he managed to chop inside, only for Zouma to slide in with a vital tackle.

01:33 PM

32 minutes

Man Utd find themselves behind and chasing another away game. Almost a quick response as Fernandes picks of Shaw at the far post, he heads back to Ronaldo but he could not get over an extremely difficult volley.

01:31 PM

GOOOOALLL! West Ham get the rub of the green to take the lead

A stroke of good fortune, but they will not care a jot. It was another decent move to find Benrahma in space at the edge of the D. He tried to curl one in the far corner with his right, it struck Varane on the midriff as he ran across and deflected into the other corner past the helpless De Gea.

01:30 PM

That Bowen chance

01:28 PM

28 minutes

From that corner Fernandes strikes the post! The ball made its way to the back post and dropped for the attacking midfielder to unleash a left-footed half volley across Fabianski, and the West Ham goalkeeper did brilliantly to tip it onto the woodwork. Man Utd's best moment.

01:26 PM

26 minutes

Rice caught Fernandes late but Martin Atkinson waves play on. Man Utd settle into some final third possession again but they are finding it difficult to fashion clear opportunities. Fernandes with a cross from the right towards Greenwood but Zouma gets there first. Corner.

01:24 PM

24 minutes

Wan-Bissaka's delivery was poor again before Benrahma produces a lovely turn in midfield to start a West Ham break, but Maguire just got his toe to a through ball played in Bowen's direction.

At the over end, Ronaldo cuts in from the left but shoots straight at Fabianski with his right. A sighter.

01:22 PM

22 minutes

Progressing the ball through central areas is proving difficult for Man Utd. This time Varane carries the ball out but the attack breaks down with Wan-Bissaka, as it tends to all too often.

Then West Ham escape up the pitch with a flowing passing move, and the ball drops to Bowen near the penalty spot after the Man Utd defence let it bounce. He did not really catch the strike cleanly but De Gea had to stick out a leg to save before Rice's drive from distance flew over. Good again from West Ham.

01:19 PM

19 minutes

That West Ham chance has got the crowd more involved in the match. The home team are starting to move the ball well in midfield, which is not an area of the pitch where Man Utd are at their strongest. Cresswell's cross is too high for Bowen.

01:18 PM

17 minutes

Fernandes challenged strongly in the air by Coufal in the penalty area, but it wasn't a foul. Man Utd starting to enjoy more control of the match but are yet to have a shot in anger.

Then West Ham produce the most threatening moment of the game! A mistake from Maguire was pounced on by Benrahma in the right half of the box, he cut the ball back to Bowen whose shot was blocked by Varane.

01:15 PM

Pogba's pain...but he was fit to continue

Manchester United's Paul Pogba appears injured during the Premier League match at the London Stadium - PA
Manchester United's Paul Pogba appears injured during the Premier League match at the London Stadium - PA

01:14 PM

14 minutes

West Ham just starting to drop a little deeper, but Ogbonna defends well against Wan-Bissaka to put the ball out for a throw. Zouma then gets in front of Ronaldo to turn a whipped Fernandes cross behind for a corner. Shaw goes across to the right to take an inswinger...decent delivery but Zouma got his head to it.

01:12 PM

12 minutes

Man Utd put their foot on the ball for a few minutes, but the possession is fairly sterile and they are forced back to Maguire and Varane. Shaw then finds some space down the left and tries to combine with Pogba and Fernandes, but the latter's return pass was too heavy.

01:11 PM

10 minutes

Zouma in the right place in the penalty area to cut out a low cross directed towards Ronaldo. West Ham harrying and hustling well in midfield again, and Rice feeds Cresswell down the left but his cross is straight down the throat of David De Gea.

01:08 PM

8 minutes

West Ham have settled pretty well, here. They look organised and well drilled out of possession, which has become their calling card under Moyes as well as fast breaks forward. Good defending from Vlasic on the left, tucking in narrow and pinching the ball in midfield. Fernandes tries a through ball to Greenwood but it runs through to Fabianski.

01:07 PM

6 minutes

A worry for Man Utd because Paul Pogba is slumped on the turf and is banging the ground in pain. Zouma stood on the top of his foot, and the centre back is a sizeable unit. The physio is on and assessing Pogba, hopefully just an impact from Man Utd's perspective.

01:04 PM

4 minutes

Luke Shaw's cross is charged down after Man Utd worked the ball through midfield. Cries of 'Viva Ronaldo' from the away end, the first of several choruses this afternoon. Coufal tried to usher the ball behind for a goal kick, but Martin Atkinson awards Man Utd their first corner of the game. Good deliver from Shaw but McTominay's header loops well over.

01:02 PM

2 minutes

Good run in behind from Vlasic tests Varane in the early minutes but the flag goes up for offside. United then settle into some slow, controlled possession at the back, with West Ham defending in a 4-4-2 shape.

01:01 PM

KICK OFF!

Manchester United get us started and look to gain some early territory down the left.

01:00 PM

A minute's applause for Jimmy Greaves

The news of whom's passing broke this morning. Greaves finished his top flight career in England with West Ham.

12:55 PM

The players are walking out

Whatever you think of Solskjaer the manager, 28 unbeaten away league games is some going. Can they make it 29 today? I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles rings around the London Stadium.

12:43 PM

A slight dig at Arsenal from Solskjaer?

We know at Man Utd when you lose a game it's crisis. We've had a good start to the season...imagine how it would be if we came here on six points for example.

12:43 PM

Sounds like West Ham could have a fluid front line

David Moyes says Bowen will occupy the No 9 spot more often than not, but that we could see Vlasic and Benrahma pop up there at different times in the game. A tough ask to replace the threat of Antonio.

12:32 PM

Some pre-match facts

  • West Ham have won two of their last six Premier League games against Man Utd, though they are winless in three. West Ham had won just one of their previous 19 against them in the competition.

  • Manchester United have won their last two Premier League meetings with West Ham, last winning three in a row against the Hammers in September 2014.

  • West Ham are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League games, their longest run in the competition since a streak of 10 games between February and April 2016.

  • Manchester United are unbeaten in 28 Premier League away games, the longest ever run without defeat on the road in English league history. Man Utd have conceded just 19 goals in this run, keeping 13 clean sheets in the process.

The team news...

It's a bit harsh on Craig Dawson to find himself on the bench after a tremendous season last term, but Kurt Zouma can give West Ham a different dimension and threat from set-pieces. Up top, Sky have Bowen through the middle in Antonio's usual spot with Vlasic on the right.

Solskjaer lining up in his 4-2-3-1 with Fred and McTominay sitting in midfield. Pogba will play free from the left and look to create with Bruno Fernandes, with Mason Greenwood and Cristiano Ronaldo the two finishers. Looks a decent balance to the front four.

Solskjaer under scrutiny despite solid Premier League start

Maybe it started with the final day draw which denied Manchester United the league title to Blackburn Rovers' benefit in 1995, but their trips to West Ham tend to offer plenty of entertainment.

There was a sensational 5-3 win in 2001-2, a comeback from two down to spur on a title challenge in 2011, Wayne Rooney's halfway line goal in 2014 and of course Winston Reid giving West Ham victory in the final game at Upton Park.

Last season's trip to east London was typical of United's away form, falling behind to a Tomas Soucek goal before Mason Greenwood, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford inspired a second half comeback. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have made a solid start to the season with 10 points from four games, although a draw at Southampton and surprise Champions League defeat at Young Boys have prompted doubts about the balance of the team. Cristiano Ronaldo has scored three goals in two appearances since his sensational return to Old Trafford, with Solskjaer angry at suggestions he was coaching from the sidelines in Switzerland.

Despite predictions that West Ham would fall back down to earth, they have been very impressive in the season's early weeks and secured victory in their Europa League group stage opener at Dinamo Zagreb despite making several changes. David Moyes will be without Michail Antonio today after he picked up two yellow cards in the draw at Southampton last week. Declan Rice will line up against the club linked with a big money move for him.

Speaking about his former club Moyes said: "I think Manchester United will always have to be competitive and try to win trophies, try to win the Premier League - that's what that club does.

"They've got a good balance of youth and experience in the squad. I think Ole's been given a really good chance to build a squad and a team and I think he's doing a good job.

"He's got a team that is more than capable this year of winning the Premier League."
