Weis Markets, Inc. (NYSE:WMK) insider upped their holding earlier this year

Looking at Weis Markets, Inc.'s (NYSE:WMK ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net buyers. That is, there were more number of shares purchased by insiders than there were sold.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Weis Markets

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Senior VP Michael Lockard bought US$183k worth of shares at a price of US$61.00 per share. We do like to see buying, but this purchase was made at well below the current price of US$86.07. Because it occurred at a lower valuation, it doesn't tell us much about whether insiders might find today's price attractive.

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Weis Markets insiders own about US$912m worth of shares (which is 39% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
