Weinstein Co.’s McDonald’s Movie ‘The Founder’ Will Open Doors Early

The Weinstein Co. is premiering The Founder on Dec. 7 at the ArcLight Hollywood for a one-week awards qualifying run before its nationwide Jan. 20 release date.

Originally, the John Lee Hancock-directed pic was to counterprogram Suicide Squad during the first weekend of August, but then word was that the film moved to late December to capitalize on awards season. This new date for Founder is earlier than expected. Pic tells the true story of how Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton), a struggling salesman from Illinois, met burger restaurant impresarios Mac and Dick McDonald, in 1950s Southern California, and pulled the business away from them to make a billion-dollar empire. The Wrestler‘s Robert Siegel penned the script. Laura Dern plays Ray Kroc’s first wife Ethel; Linda Cardellini portrays his second wife Joan Smith; John Carroll Lynch is Mac McDonald and Nick Offerman is Dick McDonald.

TWC Co-Chairman, Harvey Weinstein commented in a statement, “This film has a unique relevance to our current times. You have a persistent and, at times, calculating entrepreneur representing both the best and worst of American businessmen and who ultimately created the fast food industry as we know it today. It’s up to audiences to determine if he’s a visionary, an opportunist or a crook and how that fits in our society. I think everyone is going to want to see this story and ultimately decide for themselves.”
