A man sexually assaulted a woman and then secretly filmed her and bombarded her with hundreds of calls while on bail.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told police she was sexually assaulted by Wayne Lewis, who was arrested and questioned by officers.

The 48-year-old from Leicester was bailed as police investigated, but he went to the victim's home and recorded her through a window with a tablet.

Lewis, who has previous convictions for attempted rape and sexual assault, left the woman fearful and distressed as he sent more than 100 messages over a six-day period, and made up to 30 phone calls during two of those.

Later, he made more than 200 calls during a two-week period and sent "continuous" messages on social media, Leicestershire Police said.

He initially denied the allegations against him doing so but pleaded guilty to sexual assault and continuously engaging in behaviour which was controlling or coercive at court.

Lewis was jailed for five years and two months at Leicester Crown Court on Monday and will have to serve four years and 10 months on extended licence.

He was also given a 10-year restraining order in relation to the woman and made subject of a 10-year sexual harm prevention order – having admitted breaching one he was already the subject of.

Lewis was already on the sex offenders register.

Leicestershire Police's Emma Bailey said: "Lewis committed sexual assault but then continued to send hundreds of messages to the victim and even made recordings at her home.

"This undoubtedly caused a lot of fear and distress to the victim.

"The actions of Lewis are completely unacceptable and should not be tolerated in any way. Police will investigate any report of this kind, taking action while also providing support to those affected.

"My thanks go to the victim for her bravery and co-operation during this investigation which helped us to bring this case to court and I hope this does now allow her to continue moving forward in her life.

"We urge anyone who is a victim of a sexual offence or of any kind of controlling or coercive behaviour to make contact with us. We will take your report seriously and full support will be provided to you."
