Warner Bros. may be moving its 2021 films to streaming services, but Disney has been playing with the concept all year. The studio premiered the live-action Mulan exclusively on Disney+ in the U.S. on September 4, 2020, as a premium add-on, for $29.99. But as of December 4, 2020, Mulan moves into the catalog of Disney+ films available to all subscribers without the premium fee.

“We see this as an opportunity to bring this incredible film to a broad audience currently unable to go to movie theaters, while also further enhancing the value and attractiveness of a Disney+ subscription with this great content,” Disney CEO Bob Chapek said this summer on an earnings call. “Given the rapid changes in consumer behavior, we believe that it’s more important than ever that we continue to grow our direct relationship to our customers.”

What is Mulan about?

Directed by Niki Caro (The Zookeeper’s Wife, Whale Rider), Mulan (2020) is a coming-of-age fantasy that follows the original Chinese “Ballad of Mulan” more closely than Disney’s animated ’98 picture. Here’s the story of the legendary soldier Hua Mulan, who enlisted in China’s Imperial Army to protect her family as well as her homeland. It’s “an epic journey,” Disney says, “that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation… and a proud father.”

Singer-songwriter Christina Aguilera, who recorded a single called “Reflection” for the 1998 Mulan soundtrack, has returned with an all-new rendition of the song to accompany the release of the live-action adaptation.

The film—whose runtime clocks in at just shy of two hours—stars Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, Tzi Ma, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Ron Yuan, Gong Li, and Jet Li.
