What to Watch Friday: ‘Murder in the House of Gucci’ plus new Christmas specials

NBC

Dateline: Murder in the House of Gucci (9 p.m., NBC) - This new episode will feature insiders close to the Gucci family speaking out for the first time on network TV about the murder of Maurizio Gucci, the former CEO and third-generation scion of the fashion empire. The two-hour special will also go inside the investigation that exposed how the family’s business was undone by jealousy, backstabbing, and, ultimately, an act of murder, for which Maurizio’s ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani, was convicted. The incident is currently a major motion picture starring Adam Driver, Lady Gaga and Al Pacino.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Disney+) - The first book in Jeff Kinney’s worldwide bestselling series comes to Disney+ in the all-new animated adventure “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” Greg Heffley is a scrawny but ambitious kid with an active imagination and big plans to be rich and famous – he just has to survive middle school first. To make matters worse, Greg’s lovable best friend Rowley seems to coast through life and succeed at everything without even trying! As details of his hilarious – and often disastrous – attempts to fit in fill the pages of his journal, Greg learns to appreciate true friends and the satisfaction that comes from standing up for what is right.

The Hunt for the Chicago Strangler (Discovery+) - This true crime special looks at the 51 mostly Black women have been found strangled across Chicago since 1999, their bodies dumped in garbage bins, alleyways, and abandoned buildings. All but one of the cases remain unsolved, leading many to believe there is a serial killer or killers targeting women in Chicago. Revealing the devastating emotional toll on families and the close-knit residents victimized by fear and loss, this three part special also looks at these murders in the context of decades-long racism and neglect in Chicago’s south and west side communities. How could more than 51 women be strangled with seeming impunity over twenty years, yet their killer or killers are still at large to this day?
