Yahoo Finance Watch the Fastest Supercar Lap At Bathurst Ever
Like Indianapolis, single-car qualifying at the Bathurst 1000 has become a grand tradition. The Mount Panorama circuit is one of the best and most unique in the world, and there is no better place to see it than a run with pole on the line at the absolute limit with nothing but one driver, one car, and one goal to focus on. It is the conditions that produced Greg Murphy's "Lap of the Gods" and Scott McLaughlin's first-ever lap in a Supercar at Bathurst in the 2:03s. Early today, the series held their traditional top ten shootout session and that record fell again.
It was Chaz Mostert, winner on a last-lap pass in the unforgettable 2014 race, who did the honors for Holden and Walkinshaw Andretti United. Tickford Racing and Ford's Cameron Waters had already beaten McLaughlin's 2017 time with a lap of 2:03.686, but Mostert had been quick in practice and was a clear contender for pole coming into the session. He was purple by the end of sector 1, on record pace on the way up Mount Panorama. He was green in sector 2, enough to stay ahead. Then, through sector 3, purple again.
Mostert needed to stay at the absolute limit for an entire 3.8-mile lap to take pole, so he did. It was enough to get him to 2:03.373, the new lap record for a Supercar at Mount Panorama and 3/10ths clear of both Waters and Anton De Pasquale. With only those three breaking the 2:04 barrier, Mostert was a startling 7/10ths clear of fourth-placed Tim Slade. The next-best placed Holden on the entire grid, Shane van Gisbergen in fifth, was a full second behind Mostert's best time.
