Yahoo Finance Wizards GM denies that John Wall requested trade: 'There's no issues with John and I'
Despite rumors to the contrary, John Wall isn’t going anywhere.
Washington Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard said on Monday that their star point guard did not request a trade, and that “there’s no plans” to deal him.
“No, he didn’t request [a trade],” Sheppard said, via ESPN. “John and I talk pretty much once every other day. And [I’ve] been to many of his workouts throughout the summer.
“We have always been on the same page, same wavelength. … There’s no issues with John and I. There’s no issues with John and the Wizards. There’s no issue with anybody.”
Rumors about a John Wall-Russell Westbrook trade
The Athletic’s Shams Charania, among others, reported last week that Wall had “made it clear” that he wants to be traded out of Washington. There were rumors that Houston Rockets star Russell Westbrook — who also has said he wants to be traded — would swap with Wall.
While Charania reported that those talks had stalled, Sheppard said Monday that Wall never wanted that to happen in the first place.
Wall has played in just 73 games over the past three seasons while dealing with myriad injuries — including a ruptured Achilles’ tendon he suffered at home in early 2019. Wall missed all of last season recovering, though still has three years left on the massive four-year, $171 million deal he signed just before getting hurt.
Though it’s been quite some time since he’s been in real NBA action, Sheppard was impressed with what he saw out of Wall during a workout on Monday.
“I’ve seen enough of him the last two years and certainly this summer to know that he’s gotten his explosiveness back,” Sheppard said, via ESPN. “He’s very comfortable from 3 now and that is something that I think will be a huge weapon for us moving forward.”
