Walmart earnings, big burgers & the U.S. dollar: What to watch next week

Earnings season isn’t dead just yet. Some big retailers report next week and one in particular could move the market needle:

Walmart (WMT): The world’s largest retailer reports before the bell on Tuesday and offers the latest look at the American consumer. How will the stocks, and the market, react?

Home Depot (HD): From the consumer to home construction, investors will look to the home improvement giants Tuesday earnings release for more than just the top and bottom line.

Target (TGT): The “new CEO honeymoon” is winding down for Brian Cornell but no matter, the stock is up 32% since he took over. Will Wednesday’s earnings keep investors happy enough to extend the trend?

Other big names reporting next week include: Dollar Tree (DLTR), Staples (SPLS), Best Buy (BBY) and Foot Locker (FL)

On Wednesday investors will also be keeping an eye on the latest FOMC minutes.

On Yahoo Finance’s Midday Movers our panel weighed in on some of the other stories they’ll be watching next week.

Peter Kenny - Chief Market Strategist at Clearpool: The U.S. dollar
“The euro has increased in value by roughly ten percent over the last five weeks. European economic activity is clearly outdistancing U.S. economic activity as per Q1. What does the dollar mean relative to the euro in terms of that sort of a back drop?”

Lauren Lyster - Yahoo Finance: Mad Men and AMC stock
“It’s been a very successful show for AMC which is part of a publicly traded company (AMCX). It’s the number two scripted series on cable TV right now only behind Game of Thrones.” What might this mean for the stock now that their biggest show is shuttering?

Andy Serwer - Editor-in-Chief at Yahoo Finance: The Thickburger at Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr.
“Wednesday May 20 is the roll-out of the Thickburger...a burger coupled with a hot dog! How come they didn’t think of this about 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago?” The 1,030 calorie meal also includes potato chips..on the bun. For Andy, the closest Hardee’s is 104 miles north of Manhattan. He may be in for a pretty long lunch hour next Wednesday.
