Vote for the Charlotte Observer athlete of the week (3.12.21)

Meet this week’s nominees for the Charlotte Observer’s athlete of the week.

Readers can vote as often as they like until Friday late morning, early afternoon, when the poll will close and the winner be announced.

Here are the nominees:

Sedona Dancu, Covenant Day Soccer: The Lions’ senior had two goals and two assists to lead Covenant Day to a 10-0 win over SouthLake Christian March 2.

Dancu had two more goals in a 5-0 victory over Metrolina Christian March 5.

Dancu, a Virginia Military Institute (VMI) commit, has five goals and two assists for Covenant Day (3-0, through Sunday).

Gavin Fragale, SouthLake Christian Baseball: The Eagles’ senior went 4-for-6 at the plate with three RBI to help SouthLake Christian to wins over Gaston Christian and High Point Christian.

Fragale, a Belmont Abbey University signee, went 1-for-3 with a double and a RBI in a 3-2 win at High Point Christian March 2.

He followed that up by going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI in a 14-4 victory over Gaston Christian March 5.

SouthLake Christian is 2-0 through Sunday.

Charlotte Hoffman, Weddington Lacrosse: The Warriors’ junior goalkeeper had 22 saves in three wins as Weddington beat Charlotte Catholic, Marvin Ridge and Parkwood last week to remain unbeaten at 11-0 this season.

Hoffman had 11 saves in a 13-10 win at Charlotte Catholic March 1.

The next day, she came back with three saves in a 23-1 win at Parkwood.

Hoffman also had eight saves in a 20-6 win over Marvin Ridge March 5.

Hoffman has 66 saves for Weddington through Sunday.

Carter Holt, Hickory Soccer: The Red Tornadoes’ senior forward scored a goal and had an assist in 3-0 win at St. Stephens March 2.

Holt had three goals and two assists in a 7-1 win at South Caldwell March 3.

Holt has 13 goals and 15 assists for a Hickory team (10-0) that has outscored their opponents 56-5 through Sunday.

Jacob Hinson, Gaston Christian Golf: The Eagles’ senior chipped in on the first hole of a playoff to help Gaston Christian to victory over Asheville Christian at Gaston Country Club March 5.

Hinson was also the medalist in the same match, shooting a 39 (nine holes).

Gaston Christian and Asheville Christian were tied as a team at 195 and decided to have a playoff with their respective No. 1 players to determine the winner.

Cameron Lenox, Ardrey Kell Lacrosse: The Knights’ senior attacker started his week with four goals in a 15-14 win at Cannon School March 1.

The next day, Lenox had 23 saves in an emergency start in the goal to help his team to a 23-10 victory over Page.

Lenox has 27 goals and 10 assists for Ardrey Kell (8-1) this season.

Griffin Nixdorf, Pine Lake Prep Soccer: The Pride junior midfielder had two goals and eight assists in wins over Bradford Prep and Union Academy.

Nixdorf had a goal and four assists in an 8-1 win at Union Academy March 1.

He also had a goal and four assists in 9-0 victory over Bradford Prep March 4.

Nixdorf has 11 goals and 13 assists for Pine Lake Prep (8-2-1, through Sunday).

Gabby Polsky, Cannon School Softball: The Cougars’ senior was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with four doubles, scoring all four runs to help Cannon School to a 4-3 win at Hickory Grove, March 5.

Polsky, a George Washington University commit, also served as her team’s catcher for all seven innings.

Teri Pridgen, Cannon School Track: The Cougars’ freshman set school records in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes as she ran to victories in both events on her home track March 4.

Pridgen ran a school-record 12.71 in the 100 meters, while running to another school-record, 26.05, in the 200-meter dash.

Pridgen also helped the Cougars’ 4 X 200-meter relay team to victory, while finishing 3rd in the long jump in the same meet.

Micah Stechmiller, Lake Norman Charter Lacrosse: The Knights’ senior scored 14 goals and had four assists as Lake Norman Charter beat both Community School of Davidson and Pine Lake Prep this week to improve to 9-2 through Sunday.

Stechmiller had nine goals and two assists in a 16-6 win at Pine Lake Prep, March 1.

He also had five goals and two assists in a 16-6 at Community School of Davidson, March 4.

Stechmiller, a Queens University commit, has 57 goals and 34 assists for Lake Norman Charter through Sunday.

Tyler Roakes, Carmel Christian Baseball: The Cougars’ junior went 2-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBI, while scoring three runs to help Carmel Christian to a 12-7 win at Charlotte Latin, March 2.
