Volvo to launch both small and large electric cars

Motor Authority

Coinciding with the reveal of its new concepts previewing its next-generation compacts a week ago, Volvo confirmed plans for a second electric car.

Volvo first announced its commitment to launching an electric car last October, and now the automaker has committed to launching at least two zero-emission vehicles.

One of the electric cars will be based on the new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform for compact cars and the other on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform designed for larger cars, such as the current XC90.

While Volvo has confirmed that the SPA-based electric car will launch by 2019, the automaker is yet to announce when we’ll see the CMA-based model.

Though late to launching an electric car on the market, Volvo has been a pioneer in vehicle electrification. It unveiled an electric C30 hatch in 2009 that was used for research purposes, and some of these were even loaned out to customers to learn more about how people use electric cars on a daily basis. Volvo was also one of the first on the market with a plug-in hybrid vehicle with its V60 plug-in first shown in 2011.
