'The Voice': Nick Jonas calls himself an 'idiot' for Battle pairing after 'dead even tie'

It may be Nick Jonas' second season on "The Voice," but he made a rookie move.

Jonas paired Bradley Sinclair, 22, and Rachel Mac, 16, together during the third and final night of Battles Monday to showcase his team's youth, but he instantly regretted it after the young duo gave "the best performance we’ve had in the Battle Round."

"I’m feeling like an idiot having paired you together," he declared.

Sinclair and Mac, the youngest singer in the competition, were assigned the herculean task of Elton John's "Your Song." It left Sinclair "a little bit nervous because that’s a pretty big task to tackle," but you would never be able to tell by their performance.

The duo received a rare standing ovation from all four coaches: Jonas, Blake Shelton, John Legend and Kelsea Ballerini, who is still filling in for a sick Kelly Clarkson.

"Finally, a standing ovation," Shelton yelped.

Ballerini said she wished Clarkson "could’ve seen" the Battle. ("Kelly has tested positive for dummy and she’s not here," Shelton reminded viewers earlier in the night.)

Jonas said his team members "just gave the best performance we’ve had in the Battle Round." Legend replied without hesitation, "No question."

"Honestly, I don’t know how you decide between what we just saw now because they were both perfect," Legend said. Jonas said he's "frustrated that I have to choose between them" at all, with no steals or saves remaining in the Battles.

Shelton offered some veteran advice: "Rachel is 16 and Rachel is going to begin experiencing (stardom). If this is a dead even tie, I would start thinking about other things to consider here. And that would be one for me. You know what she’s about to go through."

Jonas, who was 13 when he experienced his big break in the music industry with the Jonas Brothers band, listened to Shelton (for once) and selected Mac as the winner.

"Rachel delivered an amazing vocal performance," Jonas said. "This is 'The Voice' after all and that's what's important at the end of the day."

"The Voice" will move to the next phase of the competition next week: The Knockouts. And the show's "never had quiet as a unique mentor as this," Jonas teased.
