A Visionary VW Electric Car—2020 I.D. Debuts at Paris Motor Show

The 2016 Paris Motor Show, which starts this weekend, is a fitting showcase for Volkswagen to debut its I.D. compact car concept, which will be one of the first of a new fleet of electric vehicles, the automaker announced. The new VW I.D., which is being touted as the future-generation “Beetle,” will have an all-electric single-charge range of a possible 400-600 km (249-373 miles) when it hits the market in 2020, according to the company. The German automaker plans to deliver an I.D. with a fully automated mode in 2025. Currently, VW only sells one electric car—the e-Golf compact car.

The look of the new zero-emission I.D. is small and rounded like a bullet car with sleek side panels and a panorama roof and spoiler. The traditional round VW logos and corner wrap lighting are also likely from early images. Volkswagen states that the new 5-door compact hatchback will be powered by an electric motor that has an output of 125 kW (equal to about 168 horsepower). The I.D. interior will feature a new more open spatial design and is the first compact to be built on VW’s Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) architecture.

Some more novel future features of the I.D. that were revealed include a steering wheel that retracts into the dashboard when in automated mode—termed “I.D. Pilot.” The car also can be used to receive parcels through a new delivery service when the driver or owner is away from home. Also, VW officials acknowledge that the car’s battery pack will be able to charge to nearly 80% of capacity within as few as 15 minutes. VW plans to launch more than two dozen electric models over the next 10 years and sell one million electric cars annually by 2025.
