Viewers are all saying the same thing about this year's Baftas

When it comes to awards ceremonies, there’s always lots to get people talking. From red carpet looks to bleeped acceptance speeches, and even awkward blunders.

But this year, things are a little different. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the 2021 BAFTAs are being held somewhat virtually. While presenters and performers are live at the Royal Albert Hall, those nominated for the awards are live streaming from home.

That means producers of the show have had to make some changes. And it seems there’s one thing they haven’t quite got right. From the offset, Twitter was abuzz with chatter about the fake laughter and applause being used in lieu of a live audience.

“Well the canned applause and laughter won’t be winning a BAFTA” tweeted one unhappy viewer. “The ‘applause’ being added to #BAFTAs coverage clearly hasn’t been added by anyone in the running for the Sound Effects BAFTA” tweeted another.

Others tried to make light of the situation, joking at how awful the dubbing is.

Tbh, we’re not sure what would be worse. Awful fake laughter, or the awkward silence of an empty venue?
