Subaru launched its first EV in the United States, the Solterra crossover, for the 2023 model year, and while it is a comfortable cruiser and comes standard with Subaru’s capable all-wheel-drive system, its on-road performance and electric range figures put the Solterra near the back of the crowded electric compact-SUV segment.
The Solterra is powered by two electric motors, with a combined 215 horsepower and 249 pound-feet of torque.
In Car and Driver testing, the Solterra accelerated to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, behind the majority of its competitors.
The Solterra was also slower in the passing tests, needing 2.5 seconds to go from 30 to 50 mph and 3.7 seconds to get from 50 to 70 mph.
According to the EPA, the Solterra Touring has an estimated 222 miles of range, five miles fewer than the base model Solterra Premium.
In Car and Driver's 75-mph highway range test, the Solterra only managed 200 miles, a ways off from the Volkswagen ID.4 and Chevrolet Equinox EV.
When we hooked the Solterra up to a DC fast-charger, it needed 48 minutes to go from 10 to 90 percent, averaging a charging rate of 67 kilowatts.
While the Solterra has adjustable regenerative braking, it does not have a true one-pedal mode that will bring the SUV to a stop without requiring the use of the brake pedal.
The Solterra is exclusively all-wheel drive, utilizing Subaru’s X-Mode for extra off-road capability.
The Solterra lacks both a frunk and a rear windshield wiper.
