If you’ve got a sweet tooth, we’ve got very good news

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, we’ve got very good news

For a while now, we’ve been hearing about the dangers of sugar. Just last October, science dropped the news on us that sugar is officially more harmful to your health than fat. (And we cried forever and ever.) Even more troubling is the fact that sugar is pretty much everywhere. There’s a reason those Starbucks drinks are so yum. Some of them contain three times as much sugar as a can of soda.

It’s not just your afternoon latte, either. A new study conducted at UCLA found that the average American consumes up to 27 pounds of high fructose corn syrup every year. That’s a lot. Like, a whole lot. Especially if you love cake. AND WHAT KIND OF MONSTER DOESN’T LOVE CAKE???

But hey, the news isn’t all bad. It turns out there’s a way to help counterbalance our sugar consumption. (All of the yes!) The secret is omega 3 fatty acids.

Omega 3s are found in foods like flax seeds, almonds, walnuts, salmon, olive oil and certain fruits and veggies. Researchers in the UCLA study found that a certain type of omega 3 called DHA helps neutralize the effect of so much sugar consumption. DHA occurs naturally in the human brain, but not in large enough quantities to combat all that cake. Make sure you’re getting extra helpings of omega 3s in your diet. For a list of foods rich in omega 3s, click here.

So go ahead and have the cake. Just maybe have a handful of almonds first. It’s all about balance, yo!
