US Market Indexes Mostly Higher

U.S. market indexes were mostly higher on Friday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,349.59 for a loss of 9.64 points or 0.04%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,502.22 for a gain of 1.62 points or 0.06%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,426.92 for a gain of 4.23 points or 0.07%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 9.59 for a loss of 0.08 points or 0.83%.


For the week, the Dow Jones gained 0.34%, the S&P 500 gained 0.05%, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.36%.

Friday's market movers

Threats from North Korea regarding nuclear weapons kept stock valuations from gaining further on Friday. Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Purchasing Managers' Composite Index decreased to 54.6 from 56.0.

  • The Baker Hughes rig count increased to 1,155 from 1,148.



In the Dow Jones Industrial Average the following stocks led losses and gains:

  • Apple (AAPL) -0.98%.

  • Merck (MRK) -0.72%.



Gains

  • Cisco (CSCO) 2.05%.

In the broad market, energy stocks led gains, and real estate led losses. Technology was higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.05%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,450.78 for a gain of 6.60 points or 0.46%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 874.87 for a gain of 5.91 points or 0.68%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,839.14 for a gain of 31.92 points or 0.36%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,739.14 for a gain of 47.32 points or 0.49%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,768.65 for a gain of 5.82 points or 0.33%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,106.61 for a gain of 0.22 points or 0.02%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,482.86 for a gain of 1.59 points or 0.11%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,387.33 for a gain of 1.09 points or 0.08%; and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 666.75 for a gain of 0.10 points or 0.02%.
