Urijah Faber Announces Retirement

Urijah Faber Announces Retirement

Urijah Faber has decided that enough is enough. It's time for him to retire from active mixed martial arts competition and move on. And he's decided to do it in his hometown.

Faber will step into the Octagon for the final time opposite Brad Pickett at UFC on FOX 22 on Dec. 17 in Sacramento, Calif. The fight was announced last week, but Faber broke the news of his retirement on The MMA Hour on Monday.

“I'm super excited to fight in (Sacramento),” Faber said. “Those are all my people out there. I built our team, Team Alpha Male (there), it's like an extended family to me, and I was raised in the greatest Sacramento area all the way through college. It's going to be a really cool event.

“I've been kind of waiting for this, and this is actually going to be my last fight. And it just feels right to do it in Sac in this new area. It just feels like the right time and the right place. I've been waiting for this new arena to be built, I was waiting for that Dominick Cruz opportunity, and I feel like this is going to be an epic event and I can't wait to do it in front of the people I love.”

Faber, 37, built his career largely on becoming the World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight champion and defending that belt on numerous occasions. He fought several times for various UFC titles, but was unable to win a UFC belt.

Over the course of his 43 professional fights (33-10), Faber has fought all the top names, but never suffered a severe injury, nor has he been on the receiving end of any brutal knockouts. With all his faculties still in order, Faber feels like it's a good way to go out.

“My mind and my body, I feel like I'm in better shape or in as good of shape as I've ever been and I want to continue in that,” said Faber.

“I'm just thankful, and I want to go out feeling good and have an amazing fight and go to the next chapter.”

The next chapter, Faber said, includes various entertainment opportunities and business ventures, but was quick to note that he's not leaving MMA. He wants to continue building future stars at Team Alpha Male, and will remain rooted in Sacramento.

He'll be going out on his own terms on his home turf.

“I just feel like it feels like the right time. It just feels like the time to have a homecoming and an adios at the same time.”
