University of Kansas investigates after student found dead in dorm room over weekend

A University of Kansas student was found dead in a residence hall over the weekend, school officials said.

Just before 5:45 p.m. Sunday, officers with KU’s Public Safety Office responded to a call of a medical emergency at Lewis Residence Hall, at 1530 Engel Road in Lawrence, said Deputy Chief James Druen. There, police found a female student deceased in her room.

“The cause of death is under investigation, and foul play is not suspected,” Druen said.

In a letter sent Sunday to residents of Lewis Hall, university officials said there was no threat to other students living in the dormitory.

“We are deeply saddened to inform you that a student was found deceased in Lewis Hall this evening,” Sarah Waters, the Director of KU Student Housing, said in the letter.

Further details around the student’s death have not been released.

“Student Housing leaders have coordinated meetings with residents of the floor to inform them of the student’s passing and ensure they know about available counseling resources,” Waters said in the letter.

Any students who need to speak with someone are encouraged to contact the university’s counseling and psychological services at 785-864-2277, or can speak with a professional counselor at any time through MySSP at https://caps.ku.edu/my-ssp.
