Yahoo Finance UK travel: Malta ‘will only let in double-jabbed UK travellers’ after going on Green List
Malta has announced new travel restrictions for holidaymakers from Britain just hours after the country was placed on the UK’s green list.
In a further blow to British tourists, only those who are fully vaccinated will be allowed into Malta without having to quarantine.
The Maltese government will impose the new restrictions from June 30 in response to rising cases of the Delta variant in the UK.
It means those who have not yet had two doses of a coronavirus vaccine will have to quarantine for up to 14 days on arrival, according to the Times of Malta.
On Thursday, the UK government added more than a dozen countries and territories to its quarantine-free green list.
Malta is the only destination that was not placed on the green watchlist, where quarantine requirements could be re-imposed at short notice, making it a more reliable choice.
However, new restrictions on the island will surely scupper getaway plans for many.
Changes to the UK’s traffic light system come into effect at 4am on June 30 and expand the green list to 27 countries and territories.
Newly added hotspots include the Balearic Islands such as Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca, attracting five million British tourists every year.
Other additions include Malta, Madeira and several Caribbean islands such as Antigua, Grenada and Barbados.
The Maltese government said UK arrivals have to present a vaccine certificate, recognised by the Superintendence of Health, to ensure the health and safety of both residents and tourists.
It comes after increasing pressure from Angela Merkel for EU countries to force Britons to quarantine on arrival.
French president Emmanuel Macron has echoed the German chancellor’s advice which she advocated given the high level of the Delta variant in the UK.
Environment Secretary George Eustice criticised the move as “not justified.”
