More than eight million people will soon be living under the toughest coronavirus restrictions as two new regions move into the top tier this week.

Parts of Nottinghamshire will enter the highest Covid alert level from Thursday, while Warrington will join Tier 3 after midnight tonight.

The announcements came as the UK reported 20,890 new Covid-19 cases and 102 further deaths overnight.

In other, more positive, developments, Boots is set to roll out a new testing service which it says can return results from swab tests in just 12 minutes.

The pharmacy chain said the LumiraDx devices, which are able to quickly process swab tests to give customers same-day results, will be rolled out in selected stores over the next few weeks.
